In the River

Edgar Jones directed and stars in this 2-reeler about a lumber camp bully (Carlton Brickert) who lures a mail-order bride (Evelyn Brent) to the wilds of Maine. He ditches his Indian girlfriend when Brent shows up but.....

Brent instantly dislikes him but he proceeds to set up a fake marriage. Jones comes to the rescue to save Brent from the bully but the spurned girlfriend decides to get rid of Brent so she can have Brickert back.

The finale takes place in the river rapids headed toward a waterfall.

Shot in Maine by Jones, the film was lost for over 100 years and was discovered in 2025.

Edgar Jones and Carlton Brickert share command of the logging camp. Brickert is a brute, while Jones calmly remarks that they can't fell trees with cripples. Brickert is also tired of 'making do' with Indians and half-breed women, so he has sent for a mail-order bride. When she arrives, it's a bedraggled Evelyn Brent, and she soon bonds with Jones. Brickert can't find a preacher, so he orders one of his men to pretend to be one for the marriage. But Brent can tell a real preacher from a phoney, even if Brickert is intent on having his way.

Jones was certainly able to get some lovely leading ladies for his movies of backwoods Maine! There are some nice twists in this movie and, as always, good camerawork to show off the woods and white-water rivers by cinematographer Jack Young.
