Ohhh, now, I get it. I used to wonder what in the world everyone on Reddit was talking about when saying Dakota Johnson could't act. But now, I do understand. She in fact can't. Whether it is Madame Web or a Lucy, you can't really tell the difference. Even in serious scenes, it really feels like she is about to burst in laughter. And from various interviews, it appears she is just like that, constantly hooked on a laughing gas, in real life (why wouldn't she be, she was born into money and probably doesn't know about hardships of life). So I guess she is not acting at all but just spewing a character's (doesn't matter which character apparently) lines as she would have said them herself.

Apart from subpar acting from the protagonist, the movie features extremely cheesy and childish dialogues from middle-aged men. I don't know about you but a grown man telling a woman he wants to be (like be be) with her after just 1 date is kind of cringy. Even worse, he decides to propose to her after a few sleepovers. You don't even know her to want to be with her. Sexual attraction is there and gone in a flash. Bizarre behavior.

But it does portray the dating life in New York City pretty accurately. Pretty average (including the look) women here do in fact have outlandish requirements for their mates. I remember when I was a student, a girl invited me to a steakhouse. While having a meal, she mentioned she didn't care how much he (whoever he is) earned, as she wanted to achieve everything on her own. After the dinner, I reached for my wallet to pay the bill but she stopped me, saying, "The one who invites pays. I wanted your company but I didn't know whether you had money or not. So when inviting you, I considered covering the bill." Well, makes sense (even though I was raised differently). A couple of decades later and I'm not sure whether it is the new generation that is out of its mind or the world changed. Today's women demand he makes a 6-figure salary at the very least, he is handsome, and this new obsession... tall. First of all, if he possesses all of these qualities, why in the world would he need you? And secondly, what is with this height non-sense? I see it all the time in Tinder, 6' minimum. I understand that the evolution has created this subconscious belief in women that bigger men are better protectors. But we are not cavemen anymore. What do women need the height for? I can see what you can do with a few million dollars. But what are you going to do with height?!

The film shows a bunch of these needy women who lack any self-reflection, and makes the viewer want dating less and less. In fact, there are these moments in the movie when Lucy is trying to convince Harry and later John that they don't need her. Unsurprisingly, she convinced me. Now, I am not sure what I might need a woman for. I earn enough for my personal needs, I cook better than most women, I experience no loneliness, and there is just so much interesting to learn and do in today's world. What do I need extra baggage for? You know what, I'm deleting Tinder.
