Subbanna's Idlis and Searing Lives
Over the past couple of weeks, Bengaluru has been wrapped in a blanket of clouds, with occasional showers adding to the mood. And in this weather, the song "Ello Suriva Male" from this film perfectly matched the ambiance around me. It instantly brought Subbanna's doseh hotel vividly to my mind!
This is undoubtedly one of the finest Kannada films released in 2024. However, after watching it on OTT, I felt that it didn't quite live up to the hype built by those who watched it in theatres. Oddly enough, although I didn't enjoy the film as much, I actually liked the trailer a lot more.
Though it's a crime genre film, the lack of unexpected twists might be one reason for my opinion.
Different opinions are natural - let them be.
The film features many characters burning in the heat of intense emotions. Yet, the one who seems to be scorched the most is Gopal Krishna Deshpande, caught in the hardships of domestic life.
And then there's Rangayana Raghu, who plays Subbanna, the doseh hotel owner - as the team itself has described, his performance is nothing short of brilliant. In fact, this might be one of his best roles since Aa Karala Rathri.
Director Sandeep Sunkad, in his debut film, deserves appreciation for the way he's built the narrative. I genuinely believe he'll bring out even more rooted and meaningful stories in his future projects.
Oh, and one more thing - remember in the trailer, Subbanna says he set aside two idlis for the crow? Well, you'll find out whose idlis those were by the end of the film.
