I wasn't so sure going into this show, so many sitcoms have failed and been so blah lately. But I have this a chance based on Shane and Stavros. It definitely exceeded my expectations, it got plenty of laughs out of me. The crew they put together all work so well together. This show doesn't try to be anything it's not, it's good light hearted fun. And it is also SCARY close to the source material, as someone who used to work in the automotive industry, this is almost exactly how things are. Can't wait for season two which has been confirmed. If it stays in track I'm sure it'll be another good season. Only 6 episodes so it'll kill 2 hours in a breeze.
If there is any reason to watch this show, it is Steve Gerben - he makes this show what it is. The indie project aura of the trailer is exactly what you will receive in the show. Six, 20-minute episodes make the entire series an easy watch in one sitting. The show ramps up over time as characters slowly develop, although it feels like we never really get to know all of the cast due to the short series format. There are plenty of humorous moments, so long as you're willing to accept the premise of the show is looking through the narrow lens of a male dominated work environment. Steve Gerben plays a convincing role of ineptness and innocence, creating the perfect launching pad for comedic antics. With the announcement of Season 2 being ordered by Netflix, my only hope is the next go around has more time to highlight individual characters.
There's a lot to be said about the comedy of Shane Gillis and the creators of the Netflix work place comedy series Tires. Most of the jokes, a teenager could write them. The characters AI generated with the description NAME EVERY TYPE OF CHARACTER FOR COMEDY IN TIRE SHOP. On the surface, this is the laziest comedy in a decade...and...that's why it works. You expect a left turn, you expect some modicum of personal growth for the characters, and they let you down every single time because that's life at a job like Valley Forge Auto. Season One was a dumpster fire and it still worked. It was one step forward, two steps back, and everything was stupid with a capital S because that S stands for Shane Gillis. Season One Gillis was by far the stand out and really kept the party moving with pitch perfect delivery of really terribly written jokes but THAT is what the office is. Gillis is a star, not because he's the best joke writer or that he's the most cerebral, but because he's the best performer of this type of humor. The show ended so quickly in Season One it's really hard to give it a higher than a 5 rating...until Season Two. The jokes are just as dumb, the running gags even dumber (the wig episode being prime example), and the storyline even lost MORE stakes than Season One. However with all the faults where it really delivers is in the dynamic of the characters. We get more and more time as they mistake after mistake and not everything works out in the end. There isn't always a stupid joke to deflect the situation in a new direction. They make you sit in it and find humor in the marinade. I think Gillis gives up some of the reins in this season and more of the established characters get a chance to shine. Thomas Hayden Church being a particular highlight for me as Shane's dad, as well as, the surprisingly incredible turn of Stavros Halkias as Dave who not only was real funny but showed some wrinkles to his character he wasn't allowed to show in Season One. Andrew Schultz wasn't as well utilized which made sense with his own career blowing up this past year. Kilah Fox and Chris O'Connor become the Pam and Jim of the tire world and it made the show much more enjoyable because you had stuff from previous episodes coming back into the story. Yes the stakes were less and it's never going to win a big major award because it's made with that goal in mind. It's made to entertain you. That's it. So IF you are really looking for a show to chat about and chat with around the water cooler and wax lyrical about social issues, this ain't for you at all. If you want to have a good time and end with a smile on your face then get a hooker and watch Tires. Much like your mom it's better from front to back.
Tires has got to be the most surprising funny show I have seen in a very long time. Sure it seems super basic and 'Office-like', but the dialogue and manners that each and every one of the characters has is so ridiculously funny especially with each situation they get themselves into. I wish that there were a couple more episodes in the season, but it's perfect that another season was just announced a day after the first season was released. If you love 'The Office' or 'Parks and Recreation' I highly suggest you watch this show, but if you are not into a lot of cussing an extremely crude humor, continue with caution. I can't wait for Season 2!!!!!
Listen, it's Shane Gillis. If you like Shane, you'll absolutely love this show. I had full and deep belly laughs every episode. The first couple episodes feel like a sketch show more than anything but once the story kicks in it really pulls some stuff together. The cast of characters have great chemistry. This is a show written by comedians for people who love dumb, stupid, hilarious juvenile comedy and that's me all the way. So if it's you, watch the show. I'm just here to support my boi Gilly and put another positive review on the webs because you're not gonna get any positive headlines in the media so here we are.
