The series Mobland starts off strong and is carried by Tom Hardy. The other actors range from decent to completely over-the-top - especially Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren, who are genuinely hard to watch.
The show lacks an overarching storyline, instead stringing together one narrative fragment after another, often feeling more like a soap opera than an actual mafia series. Many scenes are marked by illogical decisions. All in all, it's nowhere near masterpieces like The Sopranos.
It's a show you can easily binge in one or two days, have a good time with, and completely forget about four weeks later. Without Tom Hardy, it would be a 5 out of 10.

There's way too much of these types of shows now. In an ideal world they would take the best elements of all these and put them together to make a brilliant series.
There's so many holes in the plot and so many unbelievable things happening considering the prestige of the family and their enterprise. If it wasn't for Tom Hardy I may have switched off before the end.
I was stunned to find out the Pierce Brosnan was Irish, that accent is wild. Same as Helen Mirren and her ridiculous character.
Too much of this stuff is designed for the yanks, the Cotswolds isn't around the corner from London.

The last 2 or 3 episodes are quite ridiculous in how effortless the casual killing sprees are, and how fictional and convenient certain plot devices are.
I was hoping for something a bit more intelligent and cunning, but this series falls victim to laziness and convenience. It wants to be smart, but wanders into cheesy cliches on occasion.
Many unanswered questions by the end, but even if you had the answers they'd be implausible and impossible. Just accept it. This isn't sophisticated storytelling, it's blunt force rounded edges.
Yes yes, the Hardy character is good, up until he performs a miracle one-man operation against a gang on their turf, and comes out without a scratch. Okay, cool.
The final unravelling is all a bit messy, almost like the writers were in hurry to wrap things up. Maybe they got word there wouldn't be a second season. Honestly I don't think it deserves a second season.

I've been looking forward to Mobland ever since I first heard about it. First of all, I'm a huge Tom Hardy fan and would watch him in anything. He really is one of the best and most underrated actors of his generation. On top of that I'm also a Guy Ritchie fan and watch anything he does. So you can that the two of them together would give me huge expectations and Mobland not only met those expectations but has surpassed them in every way. This is as an A-list cast as you're going to get for a tv show with Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, etc all starring and Ritchie as the creator. I'll be shocked if this show and its cast isn't nominated for every major award come award season, especially Hardy. The only bad thing about the show is all the episodes aren't released at the same time so we can binge it, we have to way wait a week between shows and it's so good you want to watch the next episode as soon as possible.
MobLand is a sort of Roman history-like / Shakespearean over the top crime show that brings Miller's Crossing together with a Guy Ritchie-type universe.
Our "hero" is Tom Hardy, fixer guy for The Harringon Family, led by the diabolical and insane Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren. They want to expand into the fentanyl business, but their son may have been involved in a homicide with a rival crime lord's son...and now it's "nuclear war." Tom Hardy has to protect both his crime family and his real family - and win the war.
This show is a lot of fun. The acting is great and the production value is superb. The theme some / credits intro for this show might be the best of any show since Game of Thrones, and it really jazzes you up and gets you excited for the story.
The writing is mostly really good, but it ranges from over the top to kind of underwhelming. For example, there is a scene with a chainsaw that is bloodshed and madness, but what should have been a game-changer turned into something where then there is never really much of an emotional resonance from anyone. Characters kind of just "go on." Also, it introduces this crime lord to be the main antagonist, and I think by the end it's unclear what made him such a threat in the first place.
Lastly, this world is full of backstabbing and chaos, it's so over-the-top that nobody who existed in this world could be real, and that is both part of the fun and also the challenge of MobLand. It's in no way shape or form a real look at mob life - it's more like a Roman-era bloody tale of madness and revenge.
But, whatever.
The show is a total binge-worthy blast and I'd absolutely watch a second season.

- TriviaThe series was originally intended to be a prequel to Ray Donovan. In February 2024, Paramount+ released the premise of the series, which was to be titled the Donovans, stating, "With the most powerful clients in Europe, The Donovans will see family fortunes and reputations at risk. Odd alliances unfold, and betrayal around every corner; and while the family might be London's most elite fixers today, the nature of their business means there is no guarantee what's in store tomorrow." The story was believed to be centered around Ray Donovan's character, which would explore the rise and formation of his criminal enterprise. Guy Ritchie was named as the director and executive producer. In October 2024, Paramount+ announced that the spinoff idea was called off and the show was rewritten to become its own standalone series with no narrative connection to Ray Donovan. Guy Ritchie remained on the creative team.
