Dreadful.

Why did the writer just not call this series something else. The only resemblance the storyline bears to the original books is the names of some of the characters.

Names of characters created by Gawsworthy used in this production bear no resemblance to how he painted them in our minds and the story is completely new.

Irene Heron for example is nothing like the woman that is pivotal to the Forsyth Saga. Not the actress' fault just the way the story has been rewritten.

It is almost hilarious that because we have the same screen play writer as did Poldark. Demelza as played by Eleanor Tomlinson pops up in Victorian England as a new character I suspect because the producer/writer like the actress and wanted to employ her.

Then of course we have the totally mis cast Coles. The practice today of ignoring the demographic of yesteryear in historical dramas when it comes to ethnic representation.

This production is a travesty of the Forsyth Saga.

How to ruin a classic

Really awful , I cannot continue to watch after 1.5 episodes. The books are fantastic well written with a great captivating story. The plot has been changed beyond recognition, to a ridiculous unbelievable story line. Why take something that works and alter it so much to the point it no longer does. Added to that the horrendous miscasting of the majority of the characters, completely changing who they are , to the point they have no depth , no development and no likability. The magnificent thing about the earlier tv adaptation was the way you loved Soames , then hated him then pitied him , then loved him again. This Soames doesn't interest me in the slightest and completely miscast in the role , and lack the acting skills to bring that depth. At this pointed I turned off , if not one character interests me and I don't care what they do , then no point. I'd say avoid avoid , go watch the previous adaptation with mind blowing acting from the whole cast especially Damian Lewis.

Sign of the times

Formulaic reboot of a past masterpiece indicative of our current era. 1) More gratuitous sex 2) More gratuitous violence 3) Lack of character development 4) Non sequitur preachy politics slapped on in place of actual narrative plot and engaging script 5) bait and switch with excellent cast, costumes and title name recognition but...ultimately just a reminder to go back and watch the 2002 version to wash this nonsense out of your psyche. Thank goodness we'll always have the Golden Age of adaptations (1990-2010).

Little merit

I perceive little merit to this production so far (2/3 through). The actors are tailors' dummies with blank faces and a stagey manner of speaking. I can barely distinguish them, or care about them. And the story is unrecognisable. I feel sorry for Francesca Annis and Susan Hampshire being pitchforked into this, with their fantastic track record in historical dramas. Otherwise, the actress who plays June Forsyte has ability and shows the personality depicted in Galsworthy's original character. When I recall the Eric Porter, Kenneth More and Nyree Dawn Porter version of the Forsyte Saga, I want to weep. It was unforgettable. I tolerated the later version with Damien Lewis, but this version is little better than an abomination.

I'm not very far in to episode one and I know this won't be for me.

I've seen The Forsyte Saga (2002-3 version) a couple of times and it was really quite perfect and being that it's a period drama, I'm not sure why they bothered with this one. In the first few shots in the cathedral, I thought it might have even been AI - until I recognised Francesca Annis. It was dreadful - had the narration like Bridgerton and just feels like a copy of that. I won't bother.

Soapy

I haven't read the book, so I don't know how closely the story aligns with the original. Not a serious historical piece, for sure. For a romancings romace it looks cheaper than Bridgerton. Actors are almost distractingly beautiful, and costumes are ok. But the storytelling is very soapy/telenovela style.

Pretty but Not Galworthy

If you have read the book, A Man of Property (the first book in The Forsyte Saga) or are a fan of the ITV adaptation, go and reread or rewatch, and you'll be much happier.

Massive shame because the cast is good, the costumes are gorgeous. I think they reused some of the sets from the Miss Scarlett and the Duke.

I just think it's incredible when the source material is a masterpiece and apparently that's not good enough for modern writing/production companies.

It's like coping the Mona Lisa with a wax crayon and telling everyone it's brilliant.

Shame, I was looking forward to this.

The Earlier Versions Are Better

This is a series I had heard of but never got around to watching it, so when this version came up I thought I would give it a go. I haven't watched it all - there is very little character development and just appears to be trite and should have been set in 2025 and not 1874. I gave up trying to be convinced. If it was made by NetFlix it could not be worse.

Don't waste your time with this one - if you are interested in a faithful telling of the story with better actors see if you can track down the 2002 version.

Slow drama, characters changed beyond recognition

I've tried to like this drama as The Forsyte saga is such a compelling story. The characters have been completely changed. Soames is a huge disappointment. The whole point of the story is his love for Irene is doomed as in the story Soames is inept of showing an emotional connection in a conversation or in the bedroom. Irene was forced into the marriage through difficult circumstances and was desperately unhappy. In this tv series the couple seem to be sharing some idyllic romantic love?! I can't see what follows in the story with these characters will be credible. Episode 3 is very slow and drawn out, it's a shame as the scenery and costumes are lovely. Most of the cast seem to act like cardboard cut outs with stilted scenes, very disappointing.

Handsome faces but nothing more.

The producers seem to have taken a good story and changed it so much that there is little of the good story left.

It didn't even finish the same way as the first book of the series. Just left a big anticlimax.

The producers seem to have a penchant for naff camera angles, zooming in and out and panning around rather than actually concentrating on the dialogue or acting skills.

Apart from having many good looking actors and actresses, there is very little to the series.

Very ripe for cancellation

The show has the markings of a show that will be cancelled quickly. The choice of cast does not match the script. I have never read the books or watched the previous version, but something just feels completely off. For example, Justine Emma Moore looks too old to be his daughter. The only casting that actually works is Soames and Irene's relationship. Eleanor Tomlinson was probably the spice they expected to raise the quality of the show, but for those who have seen her other shows and movies, you would notice she is not bringing anything new.

Stick to the John Galsworthy story.

With the exception of Francesca Annis, Danny Griffin, Stephen Moyer and Jack Davenport, the casting is abysmal. Very wooden and very much a soap! The story is a complete hodgepodge...a bit here a bit there... it's just plainly bad. And to think they'll be a season 2?! How?!?! I'll stick to the 2002 version of the actual story, with Rupert Graves and Damian Lewis.

More please. Renew this already!

I feel that the series can go for several seasons if they dont rush it. The source material is there. Of course its a tv show and not a faithful adaptation, I dont expect that entirely because this is fiction not a historical biography. I'm watching for entertainment value and this delivers! Bravo. The cast is great. I am glad to see the actress from Poldark in this one. Its about to get messy, strap in!

Newcomer different perspective

I have it as a 10 as I could see it was getting hate rated. It's a 7.8 very enjoyable, the acting is great, even if some of the characters are grating (June), the storyline is interesting and it makes me want to watch the next episode. It looks expensive and for a channel 5 show that's a nice surprise. Bridgertonesque with the narrator, beautiful actors and gowns, but it's not necessarily a hindrance. Adds to the enjoyment of watching.

It's difficult when a show has such a big history and people obviously love the original material, but its unfair to for it to get scathing reviews. It's just not true.

Modern times

At first, this version of the Forsytes looks as though it was created by a couple of lovesick 15-year-old girls devoted to period dramas, but it does get more intriguing as new ideas seep into the family's social fabric. Pretty-boy Jolyon comes good, especially when his spirited stepdaughter follows her heart in her choice of suitor. Jamie Flatters is a perfect choice for this role as his whole acting style is naturally idiosyncratic and modern. Francesca Annis as the family matriarch adds spark to every scene she's in and Josette Simon is always magnificent. Maybe the formidable Frances, Jolyon's wife, is the best candidate for chair of the firm's board? Millie Gibson as Irene, however, fails to convince as a ballet dancer when the story wants us to believe she had a chance to join the corps de ballet in Paris. The script feels unimaginative and unfinished with too many dialogues being uniformly ended by one person walking away. Thanks to most of the actors, the characters do nevertheless pique our interest as to what happens next for them. This 21st century version is looking for contemporary ideas in the original text (which I haven't read, I admit) to attract young audiences but it deserves credit for providing context. Not exactly scintillating, but a watchable confection nonetheless.

Style over substance

I adore a period drama. I will watch them repeatedly and typically find myself fairly invested. This time however, I just don't care about any of the characters. It seems like more time was taken on the wardrobe and sets than on the storyline. How many loose red haired ballet shots must we endure. We get it, she's passionate and hard done by. And only 6 brief episodes? No wonder the pacing is all off and the character development is erratic. I am unlikely to watch S02 and I'll be surprised if that isn't the last before cancellation. What a waste.

Just passed

The main problem with this show is that the acting from the lead characters is simply too wooden. As a result, there isn't a single personality compelling enough to keep you fully invested in the drama.

That said, the story itself is engaging, and the overall production value is outstanding-especially the rich visual recreation of wealthy English society in the Victorian era.

Despite the stiff performances, by the time you reach the fourth episode, you'll likely find yourself continuing on rather than dropping out midway through the series... presumably.

Please Don't Endorse This AI Infected Slop

I can't say how much Generative AI the producers have used, but there's clear evidence of AI enhancements being used on the background and character's faces. I wouldn't be surprised if the script also featured AI. Though Ironically, trying to spot the AI is more fun than actually watching it. I don't really care for period dramas but the premise is wildly uninteresting and characters are shallow. Wouldn't recommend watching.

A brilliant classic serial

Forget the negative reviews. This has got everything, great drama, costumes, locations, everything a classic serial should have . I have read the original novel but I like the origin story that this adaptation explores. I love Millie Gibson and Francesca Annis, two classy actresses. Can't wait for series 2.

Great writing, engaging drama

Fantastic series with lots of little twists and turns.

Perfect for anyone who loves a good period drama.

Costumes, writing and characters all on point. You can easily get sucked into the the family drama.

Brilliant world building around the main family, and by the end of episode 1 you do find yourself keen to watch the next episode.
