At first I was skeptical of this series because I saw how easy it would be to become a glib, shallow satire of clueless, selfish, horrible rich people, just sketching out the characters at a minimum and offering nothing more.
But now I'm getting more confident that it will be worth watching. Adding the maid and the pawnbroker as characters expands the scope of where the series could go.
This episode provides a nice balance of crazy, Looney-Tunes level chaotic action mixed with character development. Mel in particular is evolving from the stock ex-wife character into something deeper.
I suspect Coop and Mel are on the same journey of incoherent disenchantment with their outwardly cushy lives with outcast Ali as the touchstone showing how a life should be lived, however dysfunctionally.
Ali stands out among all the characters as the only one with a real level of self-awareness and personal serenity. The actress is also a really good singer, assuming that's not dubbed.
