I have liked almost all of Tim Allen's tv shows and movies.
That being said, this show felt very different from what looked to be a carbon copy of any tv show he has ever done. It felt angry and depressing. Every "joke" was a political joke that had the humour level of your grandma emailing you a long joke she found from 1996". The other jokes were tired age jokes.
Such a shame because usually there is point or moral story being covered very episode in his shows...Typical sitcom style...but this one just wandered.
It is a pilot, so chemistry may take a few seasons. Stifled seemed the most natural in camera. As was the guy from Magnim PI show. The not veiled in script worship of Tim Allen was sad, not funny.
I hope they can sort this out, as this is a show I had high hopes for but am very disappointed so far.

Finished watching the first episode. I love that tim gives this show the comedy that his know for with out being censored by the studios opinions. Brought back the good feel of home improvement. Though nothing can compare to what home improvement brought to the 90s. We must remember this show is not home improvement but shifting gears. As for chemistry between the actors this is only the first episode and i'd like to see how the chemistry unfolds in the next upcoming episode. As i can not judge on one episode only. Every opion matters but for me if you disagree thats fine. Just agree to diagree and move on.
Home Improvement remains one of my all time favorite shows mainly because of Tim Allen's character, Tim Taylor. There was good writing, good chemistry amongst the characters, and no political undertones.
I was excited to learn of this new Tim Allen show. As much as I would love a Home Improvement reboot, I was hoping the show would capture some of that magic Home Improvement had. Sure it's a different time period but there is still room for a good, family comedy show.
After watching episode 1, I was left disappointed. The overall writing along with the comedy falls flat. The canned laughter, if that's what it's called nowadays, is too much and forced. Not to mention also distracting.
The chemistry between Tim Allen and Kat Dennings is not there in this episode. I hope as more episodes air, the chemistry will become stronger. To be honest though, I'm not a Kat Dennings fan. She wasn't that funny in Two Broke Girls and she's not much better in this show. The addition of Daryl Mitchell and Seann William Scott is a waste as well.
I'm willing to give Shifting Gears a few more episodes but if the next few episodes follow the same formula as this one, Shifting Gears won't make it out of first gear or first season.

The jokes are sooo cringy. I've loved all of Tim Allen's other shows, but this one feels like a youtube rant instead of a sitcom. It seems like he wanted a platform to complain about how "the world today is terrible" and how "kids have no work ethic." The entire premise is based on a strained relationship with his daughter, but his character spends most of the time yelling about the news and social media. I've seen plenty of shows walk the line with that humor and balance the grouchy old guy character with sweet, young kids. This show does not do that. His character is angry and miserable and outdated.
While he still has his two big franchises ('Toy Story' and 'The Santa Clause') Tim Allen's big screen career seems to have stalled, so a return to TV (his third after 'Home Improvement' and 'Last Man Standing') seemed logical.
The premise is good, and I think Allen's chemistry with Kat Dennings (another sitcom veteran, having been in '2 Broke Girls') will grow with time.
I'm not sure about the whipsmart/sarky kids, or the very two dimensional co-workers, but this is only the Pilot episode, and adding in the fact that the two creators/writers here were let go, shows that sitcom has room to grow.
The bickering between father and daughter gets a bit wearying, but I think this premise does allow for a bit more depth for Allen to explore.
It's very easy with him to think of his two previous hit shows, but hopefully people will give his latest offering a go.

- TriviaOne of Tim Allen and Kat Dennings first scenes subtly references both their previous shows. Tim Allen's character Mike says that he builds things that last a joke about his character Tim Taylor from Home Improvement who broke many things and Kat Dennings character Riley says she came back because she's broke a reference to her time on Two Broke Girls.
