Ep 13 fires up with a high-stakes class-action lawsuit centered on a tragic incident at a sorority party. The legal intrigue is smartly structured - Olympia defends a young woman accused of misconduct during a chaotic night. What sets the episode apart is how the case reflects and amplifies the show's personal tensions.
Matty brings Alfie to the office for Family Day, turning workplace routine into emotional terrain - a perfect mirror to the courtroom drama unfolding. The trial scenes are sharp and well-paced, while the broader dynamics - family, firm loyalty, guilt, and legacy - resonate beneath the surface.
Olympia and Matty anchor the narrative: Olympia with her moral clarity and courtroom grace, Matty with her quiet resilience amid complicated loyalties.
Pregame holds its own as an emotionally layered entry that reminds us Matlock hits its best beats when the personal and professional collide.

After her guilt feelings were stressed in the last episode, Kathy Bates gets to expand the range of her Matlock character here, distracted by those feelings while trying to help Olympia win a major case based on a dangerous energy drink "Slammed" marketed towards young persons.
Case becomes more serious when they get a client Zoe accused of murdering a fellow sorority sister by spiking a Slammed drink served to the victim.
With a vindictive assistant district attorney out to defeat Olympia, the case quickly goes south, as circumstantial evidence mounts up against Zoe. But Olympia pulls a Perry Mason and identifies the real culprit sitting in court. Zoe's lingering guilt feelings concerning the victim mirror Matty's own. But the major class action suit remains.
A fun subplot has Matty bringing her grandson Alfie to work for Family Day. And Alfie's cleverness helps advance their clandestine investigation into Julian's culpability re: his mom's death.
Beau Bridges as the boss is back, mysterious as ever, and Leah's love affair with Kira advances but with complications. A new character is teased, as Matty's quirky sister Bitsy (played by '80s star Julie Hagerty) shows up just as the segment ends.

- TriviaMadeline (Kathy Bates) mentions that she hasn't smoked the "devil's lettuce" (namely marijuana) since 1972. Ironically, in Harry's Law (2011), the lawyer Harriet Korn (also played by Bates) used to smoke pot. More significantly, Bates starred in the Netflix series Disjointed (2017) as Ruth, a show which centered on Ruth owning and operating a marijuana dispensary.
- ErroresOlympia asks the witnesses if anyone saw someone touch Zoe's drink. Since Zoe is accused of spiking Violet's drink, Olympia should have asked if anyone saw someone touch Violet's drink, not Zoe's.

Howard 'Senior' Markston: Feeling anything?
Madeline Matlock: Not really. Except I love this song more than I've loved anything ever.
