If you want to have fun and laugh and just turn of your brain, then get into it. The cast clearly all get along with each other so well and the comedy was really written to elevate their strong suits. There were a lot of very unique but relatable situations brought up in the episode that were so enjoyable to watch play out. Each character feels like I could have met them at a party or in a college class and that's what makes it so engaging for me. There's a level of comfort in this show that I love. Even though it's shot kind of like a prestige tv show it still has single-camera sitcom energy.
This is such a strong pilot, really efficiently establishing the tone, characters, dynamics, and keeps the jokes flowing. Usually sitcoms don't come out the gate this confident; there are some edgy jokes, but I felt they were earned and natural to the characters. Also the chemistry in this cast is outrageous.
Really the only thing lacking with the show is the episode count. Praying that next season gets at least a double bill - but really, these kinds of lowkey hangout ensemble sitcoms need the traditional 24 ep season. There needs to be room to play around in the story world, have gimmicky one-off episodes where nothing big picture really happens -- this is where sitcoms thrive. Otherwise, between the show not wanting you to take things too seriously & just vibe, and the show needing to bring its season threads to fruition, there's a tension between what the show wants to be and what it's been given to work with that becomes untenable.
Thankfully, Adults chooses story threads of appropriate weight to coax the audience into this story world over 8 episodes. I was worried that they might push the central 'will they won't they' too soon, but they do the more interesting thing of putting it off for future seasons and allowing the chemistry to develop the dynamic naturally.
Praying that FX has realistic expectations for the show's success and has the faith to let it grow. This show rules and I really hope it gets renewed!! FX has a heater on its hands; with more seasons this could definitely be a new New Girl.
