Thirtysomething Sophie Monaghan is an up and coming New York City chef, she just promoted to sous chef at a high end eatery owned by the controlling Evelyn James. Her goal is to become a high end executive chef in a key market by age forty. At the beginning of the summer, Sophie is called home to Montauk for a family "emergency", as the family business, a casual seafood restaurant, is closed to folding. Started by her father who passed three years ago and who was known as one of the best traditional cooks in Montauk, it was taken over by Sophie's older sister Abigail, who besides honoring the legacy of their father, has hated every moment of it in being in the kitchen not naturally her wheelhouse. Not knowing the nature of the emergency and being the busy summer season, Evelyn only gives Sophie half the time off she requested and only on the favor of preparing a dinner at her Montauk estate for potential investors, Sophie who could come out of the deal with that prized executive chef position at a new restaurant. Sophie's goal in Montauk is to provide Abigail a refresh with some new recipes to appeal to the changing market of now rich tourists, and a remodel of tired looking front of house. Sophie ends up reconnecting with childhood friend Cam Easton - Sophie's first kiss at age twelve - who like Abigail took over the family business of a fish market which is also facing some strains in too much work and not enough staff, but who unlike Abigail loves what he does and loves Montauk. As a potential romance seems to be burgeoning between Sophie and Cam, what happens between them is affected by their different and seemingly incompatible life goals, and Sophie's relationship with Evelyn who would not take too kindly if she were to learn that the family emergency was to act as chef for "a competitor".—Huggo
