The Ozymandias of Takopi
This is without a doubt the greatest episode of Takopi's Original Sin and a contender for Episode of the Year. It deserves a 10/10 rating on IMDb, just like Ozymandias. Although 9.9 is more likely. But nothing less than that. My personal rating: 2022/10
Peak direction, peak animation, peak characterization, peak plot, peak lore-everything about this episode is a masterpiece. As a manga reader, I already knew this was going to be my favorite episode. But the adaptation is beyond perfect. The direction and animation are so good that the anime elevates the source material in every way. There are even anime-original scenes that give more context to the situation. It is no wonder this episode is so visually stunning when names like Hirotaka Mori, Yuuki Hayashi, Takashi Kojima, and Keiichirou Saitou worked on it.
Episode 5 finally reveals the true meaning of the title "Takopi's Original Sin". This is one of the most mind-blowing plot twists ever seen in an anime that rivals the greatest plot twists in Attack on Titan. Given the titles of the first and fifth episodes, I am pretty sure the author, Taizan 5, was inspired by AoT. I don't know how true this is, but I've also read somewhere that Taizan 5 claimed their favorite series to be Re:Zero (W taste). This makes so much sense because Takopi reminds me of Re:Zero in so many ways. And this episode has tons of parallels to Arc 6. But I won't spoil anything.
This is the darkest and most shocking this anime has ever been, and we've already had a lot of messed-up moments in the series. The drama and tension are at their peak. But what really stands out to me is the character of Takopi. Our perspective on all the characters changes with this episode, especially Shizuka and Marina. But the true protagonist has always been this alien who wants to make others happy. And he is the character who has to deal with the trauma of all these children. Once innocent, now broken.
Overall, one of the greatest episodes in television history. The next and final episode of Takopi will be an emotional rollercoaster. I don't think it will surpass this one, but it may end up being my second favorite episode of the anime. I can guarantee that the ending will be perfect.
