In the Tall Grass

Am I missing something? I feel like I'm missing something.

I don't enjoy holding films in poor regard. Folks behind any production work very hard, and maybe the movie just isn't for me. But I find this altogether mysterious.

I can't say I like the visual style, though I can look past it if the content is worthwhile otherwise. But the best I can say is that the basic concept, of a person in their apartment, holds some promise. In my mind, it all falls apart from there - but what is the "it" that is falling apart? What is 'In the tall grass' trying to convey?

I've watched a fair number of full-length features that toyed with unconventional narratives, and enjoyed them; I've watched a fair number of short films with minimal to no plot, where the content is largely open to interpretation, and at least found them interesting if I didn't quite enjoy them. This, however, is pedestrian. It gives us an 8-minute sequence of images that have no plot, and no meaning I can discern. The video's description waxes poetic about the artistic intent behind the short, but I read it and think to myself, "This paragraph is surely talking about an entirely different film, right?"

The result is what seems like what could have been a proof of concept for a longer, bolder feature, or with these graphics, maybe a survival horror videogame. Some grass, a swing, a box, a creepy kid, changes in surroundings - these are things one can work with. They do not inherently constitute a worthy picture - not if there is no connection, no active events for them to have a part in. If I recounted, in great detail, the entirety of these 8 minutes, I still would not admit to spoilers, because I don't think there's anything to be spoiled.

I trust that the folks behind 'In the tall grass' have grown in their careers and found success elsewhere. I think they're probably all very skilled people with great ideas. But you couldn't tell from this.

...escaping from the frame of our perspectives. or definitions. or expectations. a remarkable film. for remind. for reflect. as confession about an empty universe, webs of fears, mix of reality and imaginary challenges. and this does it a must see. not for understand. not exactly for the admirable artistic virtues. but as a kind of stop of time. for reflect, for see around yourself, for feel a form of darkness out of descriptions. and it is enough.

I started watching this movie with no expectations, but it was a surprise to me. Plot was a bit confusing and they could have made it even more interesting. Storyline was good and acting was incredible.
