I went into this blind. I love Blumhouse movies. Even the less than stellar ones I have always enjoyed. This was very suspenseful! The reviews panning this must have wanted gore and jump scares. If that what you want this isn't the one for you. The darkness of grief can be all consuming. I sat on the edge of my seat through this. And cried at the ending. Then started it all over right away for a second watch to see what I'd missed before. This is one of my favorite movies of the year.
Holy crap. This is truly a hidden gem. It's not the scary found footage trope so often seen. No ghosts or a long forgotten haunted asylum. The monster in this it's a little too close to home. I think there was one jump scare or one that got me anyway and the whole thing. It was raw, it was visceral, and it was heartbreaking. This is one of those that I'm not sure that I can watch again. There was no gore, so if that's what you're looking for this is not for you. This truly felt like someone had found a camera with a tape in it and played it. I literally sat in silence for the last 30 minutes before I could gather my thoughts enough to write this review.
Okay I know there are some very large and even glaring plot holes in this found footage movie. That's why I rated it a six. It's 93 minutes of your life! And for that short amount of time I think it's totally worth it. It has some Gabbie Prieto vibes in it. So if that's a trigger beware. Some good jump scares and the DOG! (Dog-o is okay in this. I won't watch something where an animal is hurt. Human? Okay by me! Animal? I nope right out on that.) little annoying how perfect they look throughout the whole thing but hey. They're in their 20s! The big OMG moment for me was the sweatshirt near the end. When you see it you'll know!
