I think the most striking part of this series is how the fantasy gimmick it is based on, which is revealed surprisingly late in the show, allows for unique fights. This results in a borderline ridiculous amount of explanation (often by narrator) of what is happening sometimes, but the creativity that things can unfold with is probably worth it. Puts it its own place in the action genre in my opinion. I haven't watched too many anime so I don't know if this is a common thing.
Other than that, the plot itself is organized in a very heterogeneous manner and you can't really guess the weird things that unfold later on. This also REALLY pushes the tv-14 age rating, which is strange for a show with child protagonists and simply not evident from the first few episodes.
