Exquisite ink-wash animation - in my heart, an eternal classic of Chinese animation and an absolute artistic treasure. As China's first ink-wash animated film, it successfully brought the rich and outstanding traditional Chinese culture to the world. Unfortunately, the Shanghai Animation Film Studio produced only four such ink-wash animations in the entire 20th century. Alas.
To me, watching this film felt like sitting through a 90-minute musical. The production is quite exquisite, and the K-pop interludes are nice, but the plot is really weak and clichéd, and the character development is rather hollow. I couldn't understand the characters' motivations, and there are some minor plot holes. Still, at least for K-pop fans, it's a successful export of K-pop culture, and overall it's pretty good. Winning the Oscar for Best Original Score wouldn't be a problem at all.
