I watched this episode back to back with the previous special episode. The pacing is really intense, the action is superbe and the emotion exudes from the several scenes. The ending itself is bold and the author decided to take a very strong step towards a non trivial ending avoiding the cheesiness of a happy ending or a huge fan service. For me it appeared quite realistic, with no illusions and I don't think that a different ending would have made such a difference. Good things and bad things happen and Eren demonstrates to be a complex character that took some hard decisions facing a dilemma, being a subject of his own idea of freedom. Unfortunately I found some plot holes that are a minor thing with respect to the whole execution. I had several ideas for minor plot arcs in the last episode that are solved rather quickly in the ending, but I think that the main poins of the huge plot have been concluded, and this matters the most. I was also told that the anime changed or rectified several aspect of its manga counterpart. As an anime only fan I'm not disappointed despite the ending is slightly inferior to the rest and I think that, as a whole, the series was a great experience and great fun to watch. I strongly recommend.
I watched all five seasons and I can tell one thing: at the end I didn't care, I just wanted that it ended, and soon. In the last season I smiled barely twice in ten (ten!) episodes. This was a torture, at the end I couldn't care less about the characters, the deaths and their fate. I barely remembered the plot from the previous seasons. Everything was so devoided of any tension, any build-up. Characters supposed to be in absolute danger just were going around the castle as if there was no menace at all. It was so disappointing, and the music made it even worse. The last season tried to smooth down some of the flaws of the previous seasons, but the damage was already done. What an amount of wasted potential, this is my biggest regret. Repeating the same jokes 100 times doesn't make them funnier, just more and more boring. Where are the brillant writers of the first seasons of Futurama? Or of the Simpsons? This show pales compared to them. And yes, Matt Groening lost his magic touch nearly 20 years ago, it's a fact.
This new, long episode embodies the real essence of Attack on Titan: the fight against an ineluctable fate and the value of freedom. There are the ones who surrender to it and others that fight against it trying to modify the course of events. Despite all the attempts Eren, in his search for the supreme freedom, wants to take it from the entire world, but at the same time he knows that his "freedom" is only apparent, since he has to fullfil the future he has already foreseen. On the other hand his friends, that might be easily under his control, are left free to decide: let Eren pursue his destiny or stop him. This leaves them free to choose only apparently since their freedom depends is concatenated to the decision/will of a single individual. The spirit of sacrifice of every person in the story is tested and the robustness of their convincements either. From the technical point of view Mappa studio shows again to be almost unmatched and solid, with smooth CGI and great animations. Being the penultimate episode of the series, it leaves you eager to see more as soon as possible.
