This is a crime investigation serie. We know there are many, but the difference between those series which use the same theme are the development of the different characters. The more we get to know about the characters and be involved with their stories as well as what motivates them to pursue the criminals, more we can feel attached to the story. However this is exactly what I missed here: character development. Watching the first episodes I really wanted to know and understand more about the main character, who gives name to the series, and I thought they were going to this direction but instead they preferred to leave this aside and focus on the murder case (considering that there is only one crime to be solved during the entire season). So by the middle of the serie I was feeling tired and kind of frustrated, wondering when I would get to know the characters better. The few moments they focused on the characters are all very superficial. If the most important point of the serie is the woman Ballard the least they could do is focusing on her and not just what she does at work. I finished watching more because I really liked the acting, but if there's a season 2 and there is no development on this point, there are a lot better series with this topic to watch out there.
This specific episode wasn't so bad as others, however it was not good enough to redeem a bunch of other terrible scripts and inconsistencies from previous episodes. In general, apart from the ridiculous Island scene, the script was okay here, Ellie finally starts to feel more like the revenge and the consequences of it, there was a lot of action, good acting (including Bella's acting) conflict, and someone to tell Ellie how she's been an annoying brat (Jesse) At this point the writers made Ellie's character so annoying and unlikeable I couldn't care less about what will happen to her, which is really sad. I don't understand why the writers would portrait her like this annoying, she was more immature here as an adult than when she was a kid, in the first season, I' m done with Ellie. If I watch season 3 it will be for other characters like Abby or Tommy. I didn't play the game, and unlike people say, I still didn't like this season. I'm not looking forward to season 3, but who knows, maybe the writers can surprise us with a decent season 3, but I definitely won't be waiting for it.
I am giving this a 4 star because of the action scenes, production, scenario, no one can deny how amazing they created the atmosphere of the game, and everyone who is working on it, deserves many awards. I also want to say I have never played the game, and I loved season 1, watched it more than twice waiting for season 2. Unfortunately I think my journey stops here, because there is a serious problem when the two main characters this season (Dina and Ellie) start to be portrayed awfully. Did they forget they are in an apocalyptic environment surrounded by not only monsters who can infect and kill you but also by crazy organizations formed by the most cruel human beings? I don't think is the actresses fault, it is really the script, the two characters and their lines, as well as their relationship, all completely superficial, out of place. When they are together it really seems like an awful teenage soap opera. In fact this two are 19, they can hardly be seen as teenagers, they are adults, but they behave like they are 12. One of my favorite episodes of season 1, is the one Ellie is playing around with her crush/friend at the mall. Nothing seems superficial in this episode, you can see the connection between the characters and you can see even though they are teenagers and want to be together they never forget what is going on around them, and their responsibilities. Ellie seems a lot more mature then than now. I got to the point I cannot take Ellie serious anymore, most of the times it seems like she forgot about Joe, and the trauma she had experienced, or that she is on a journey for revenge. Well if this is the main story and I am not buying it, it is time for me to move on and find a better serie to watch. I'll keep the good memory of an epic first season.
