I can't understand how, after so many years of development, this is the best they could do. This show is bad, people. It's completely undeserving of the Alien moniker. Noah Hawley should be prosecuted. How many more franchises are they going to let this guy butcher? I couldn't even get through the episode.
The first episode was fairly strong, but there was already a steep drop off going into E2. The world-building in Alien Earth is already showing some serious gaps. The VFX are impressive, but the writing is full of holes. Honestly, it feels like any sci-fi fan in the writers' room could have pointed out the inconsistencies. It's not that they're leaving breadcrumbs for a bigger mystery-there just doesn't seem to be one. (Unless the mystery is why isn't this script better?) Instead, the story comes across as careless and lacking intention.
I really don't enjoy watching a movie and feeling like I'm not in good hands with its director. Unfortunately, that was my experience with this iteration of Superman.
The choices made in this movie are so perplexing. Gunn did well with Guardians, but his vision for Superman (if he has one) is all over the place. The humor in Guardians generally worked, but Superman's scenes are littered with comedic beats that fall flat on their faces. (The animated dog, Krypto, is the only performance with comedic timing.)
If I had to guess, too many conflicting and overly-specific notes from the studio/producers are to blame for this mess of a movie, but that's me giving the creatives the benefit of the doubt.
