It's only August but I'm calling it. This is the film of the year, for me. My favourite genre is horror, but truly great cinema is truly great cinema, regardless of genre. The seats at Lumière for NZIFF were packed, yet despite a three hour run time, no one moved a muscle. Most audiences will get up & down in a film that barely covers 80 minutes. The performances are some of the best I've ever seen, & even if you aren't familiar with the art of Kabuki theatre, you would have a stone heart not be moved by the work. I had to bite my hand to prevent audible sobbing & was left shaking, mascara running down my face, in absolute awe of what I had witnessed. The Oscars are not good enough for this film.
LOVE THIS FILM. So elegant. Perfect, subtle score, very Crimes of The Future/Howard Shore.
This film is SO much better than the trailer suggests. I was utterly enthralled.
L've always considered Ben Foster one of the greats & it is wonderful to see him playing such a complex, toned down character. I wish more directors gave him opportunities like this, I can't understand why he's not utilised more. Can't believe this is only the second film from James Buxton, so excited to see what he does next. I am INVESTED.
If you appreciate films like One Hour Photo & Nightcrawler, you'll appreciate this. Such a treat. Easily one of my favourite films of the year so far, which has been full of superb cinema.

When I heard practical effects were going to be a major feature of this film, I put my money where my heart is & saw this at the cinema. I am so so pleased to see that the realism of practical effects is still growing & evolving & it is such a glorious thing.
I really enjoyed this thoughtful thriller, the child was a bit superfluous but Christopher Abbot was incredible & Julia Garner is always compelling. Some of the visual choices were breathtaking & overall I really liked the direction they took into a different take on werewolf lore. Surprisingly moving & jump scares that didn't resort to tropes. An awesome big screen experience with the moiderous family.
