Such a fun show. The premise is a doctor in the Antipodes in the 19th century and all the associated convicts, governors and soldiers. There is smuggling, theft, hangings, genteel ladies and cruel officers, everything you'd expect from a historical costume drama. But there is also a very interesting medicine theme showing the brutality of emerging clinical practices
Insert a couple of known fictional characters (Dodger and Fagin) and it feels immediately familiar which allows the viewer to be invested and comfortable at the same time.
The script is very good, but it's the acting of the main characters which really makes it such a joy. David Thewlis is a brilliant Fagin.
I'm hoping there's a second season.

I watched the whole series because it was bearable and I adore Mike Flanagan's work
However, it lacked tension. At no point was I wondering what would happen or how it would end - the story is almost incidental to the show.
It was kind of fun referencing the individual plot lines to Poe's books. There were a few decent jump scares. The casting was great. The camera work and atmosphere top notch.
But overall it was boring. Had it been badly done, I would have gladly abandoned it around episode 3-4 when it was clear nothing new was going to be introduced to the turgid plod towards the inevitable conclusion.
But I kept going and at the end I felt moderately disappointed that I had.

I purchased this last season of FTWD despite the previous seasons declining in quality as I wanted to see it though
It's so bad I feel like the writers have been trolling us. This episode stands as an example of everything that has gone wrong with the series. Awful dialogue. Ridiculous plot lines. Actors who look like even the pay check isn't enough to make up for the humiliation they are enduring.
I won't write a long review as I suspect the number of people who reach this point in the show will be so vanishingly small that they won't need a lengthy critique as to whether or not to watch it.
