I was really looking forward to this. Such a good cast and interesting setting. Loved the idea of the Thursday Murder Club run by a whole lot of British eccentrics. I had not read the books it is based on.
It was watchable enough but I just was left feeling let down and empty and thinking, "What was the point of that?". I think the main issue was that the plot had absolutely no substance and was very contrived and superficial. Also, there just weren't enough really funny moments. It never got beyond mildly amusing, if that. And really, nothing for the cast to get their teeth into acting wise. If I am brutal, for a stellar cast, the acting wasn't that great - but then there wasn't much of a script to work with. David Tennant tried hard to make the most of his part but ended up overacting. Brosnan seemed totally miscast. Mirren was like a bitter old maiden Aunt and never got out of second gear. As for Imrie, her character was so bland, I cannot believe that she even took the part. The cake 'joke' was utterly tedious.
Seemed like a huge missed opportunity. Not a patch on 'The Quartet' which I loved.
Pity.

A good watch. Mildly funny, with some very good comedy bits now and then. Well-acted and keeps you guessing. We all will have characters we wish are the culprit. I think the variety of the characters involved is the main strength as you get to like and dislike them. So, an enjoyable romp. However, it all felt a bit long, and I think could have benefitted from being a few episodes shorter. I noticed that I was getting distracted and wishing that the killer would be revealed sooner. It goes around the houses quite a bit and, and like Poirot, I started getting a bit irritated with the detective who is full of herself - and wishing that she would get to the point. I expected more of a twist at the end, but I was not unhappy with regard to whom the killer was!
Just a lovely film. Charming and nostalgic, a delightful near, two hours of escapism in a nasty world. It doesn't pretend to be anything else than it is. A good old story - totally unrealistic in parts but that just isn't important. You will feel better for having watched it. Beautiful acting by the main actress and lots of excellent supporting actors too. It isn't deep, with incredible dialogue or huge, intense meaning, with sex and violence and swearing and twists and turns. It is gentle, and somehow you actually care about some of the characters in it.
It will not be everyone's cup of tea - but that doesn't matter. There is a place for this type of film, and many will just feel a warm glow having watched it.
