Most of the acting was okay, the dialogue recording in the first two episodes was awful - couldn't hear half of it

I knew 20 minutes in that this was a mistake, but I persisted because fracking was mentioned and I thought that even if it wasn't very good, I might enjoy seeing a show that pointed a finger at that for the evil it is. There hasn't been much on that I wanted to watch, so I ended up sticking with it for four episodes. And yet I can't be bothered to watch the final two, because it just isn't engaging.

I've spent most of the watch time trying to figure out whether this is supposed to be a parody. If it is, it falls short, because it never made me laugh.

Episode 1 - gruesome horror Episode 2 - teen drama Episode 3 - what am I watching?

Episode 4 - the lead shows her human side, the mystery deepens, men in cheap yellow jumpsuits: so surely this is a parody after all?

Maybe this series is parodying itself.

As others have said the photography and other production valued are excellent, but the actual script didn't do it for me. What is up with the current dislike of dialogue. People say the acting was great. I can't really fault it, but it's not really that hard to stare at a camera and look sad, and mumble a little. There was an awful lot of that. And most of the supporting characters were just tropes.

Most of the film is unremittingly tragic, violent, and depressing. Long stretches of the protagonist's life are skipped over in a way that leaves enormous holes in his story. (Sorry, trying to avoid spoilers.)

There are a couple of nice scenes where the characters manage a three minute conversation, and one very positive "shock" moment. But that, plus a pretty girl and a bit of hope isn't enough to make it worth the interminable hell of the first 3/4 of the series.

A star studded cast, and even some decent acting just couldn't save this.

Creepy houses (2), salt-of-the-earth servants (2), creepy children (2?), dissolute adults (2), handsome doctors (2), family secrets (plenty) ... all stitched together with way too many flashbacks.

The whole film is just a parade of set pieces working hard at maximum gothicness while providing little engagement. About two thirds of the way through I thought to myself, "Why doesn't this film make me feel anything? It doesn't frighten me, it doesn't touch me in any way, and there are definitely no laughs." It's hard to love the characters, it's hard to hate them, either - or care what happens next. Waste of time.
