Last night I got out of bed in the wee small hours to watch the Tyson Vs. Paul fight - tonight I watched Megalopolis - not sure which was worse but safe to say it's been a bloody awful weekend's viewing and like a right eejit I suffered through both to the bitter end.
Like many people on IMDB The Godfather I/II is my favourite movie and regardless of anything else Coppola does in life - I'll always give his movies a go.
So that's why I'm sad to say that Megatrolopis is just dire - it's one of those movies where an hour in you debate whether to cut your losses or persist in a vain hope that the second half will be better - knowing that the odds are very heavily against.
I think I'm a relatively intelligent person, like usually I'm the one asked to explain the plot by the rest of my family - but I can honestly say I haven't the faintest idea of what the plot, story or point of Megalopolis is - literally no clue! There's a Trump like populist character - whose a bad guy - maybe that's part of the message? If yes then I don't imagine this movie will sway any Trump supporters; by the way I don't mean to denigrate Trump supporters, and for the Trump supporters - 'denigrate' means 'put down'.
The acting is cartoonish - like any of the lesser superhero movies. There's a main theme around ancient Rome throughout - whilst seemingly set in the future or maybe in an alternative present?
If forced to find something positive to say - I can think of two - the Art Deco set design looks great (although hardly an original idea) - and Natalie Emmanuel is a pleasant distraction.
I've heard that Coppola sunk all his own money into this movie and I really fear he's going to go bust again but this time very late in life - I just hope he held enough back to see him through... I'll read the other reviews on IMDB now - particularly the positive ones - maybe there's some really significant things that escaped me. I'm sure some will say it's a work of genius - that's just gone over my head and that will be properly appreciated in years to come - I honestly hope that they are right - for the great man's sake at least.

Fantastic series! I think of myself as a minor history buff it was a little embarrassing to realise how much I didn't actually know about WW2, e.g. The fighting that took place between the British and French forces was a jaw dropping revelation for me.
The colourisation is so well done that you soon forget that it's even there as the makers, rightly, concentrate on the stories behind some of the main events of the war - it simply adds authenticity and depth rather than being the USP of the series itself The series is also highly effective in getting across the sheer scale of WW2, as much as we might think we already know this - the series helps you more fully appreciate that this was a history defining event and that an entirely opposite outcome was absolutely possible. An alternative outcome which would have shaped the world we know today very differently and much, much darker - we should never forget and pay tribute to the ultimate sacrifice made by so many millions of our forefathers.
