The Substance is a daring and intense film that doesn't hold back. From the very beginning, it dives headfirst into its narrative, which is both a strength and a weakness. While the lack of character development left me wanting more, the film makes up for it with its sharp commentary and breathtaking visual style.
Demi Moore's performance is exceptional, particularly as the story escalates. The makeup and costume work are astonishing, creating a unique blend of body horror and striking imagery. By the third act, the film becomes unapologetically graphic and uncompromising, delivering a memorable and shocking finale.
The score deserves special mention for perfectly complementing the film's themes and aesthetic. While The Substance may not be for everyone, it's a provocative, stylish film that true cinephiles shouldn't miss.

Heretic is a masterclass in tension and storytelling. While it's not a traditional horror film, it's filled with nerve-wracking moments and an intriguing mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Hugh Grant delivers one of his best performances in years, perfectly embodying a character who is both charming and deeply unsettling. The two younger actresses also impress, though their characters are initially confusing. Thankfully, as the plot unfolds, their motivations and behavior are fully justified, adding another layer to the story.
What sets Heretic apart is its willingness to tackle controversial themes, particularly religion. It's bold, provocative, and unafraid to challenge the audience. The mystery at the heart of the film is expertly crafted, rewarding viewers who pay close attention to the details from the very beginning.
If you're looking for a thriller that's both intense and thought-provoking, Heretic is a must-watch.

Let's get one thing straight: Knock Knock is by no stretch of the imagination a "good" film. The first act is downright painful to sit through, with cringe-worthy acting and a family dynamic that feels as believable as a cardboard cutout. I didn't buy it for a second.
But then something strange happened. As the second and third acts unfolded, I started to lean into the campy nature of it all. Keanu Reeves, bless his heart, gives it his all, and Ana de Armas is captivating in her unhinged energy. I wish I could say the same for Eli Roth. As a director, he just doesn't seem to have a distinctive style, voice, or vision, which leaves Knock Knock feeling like a movie without an identity.
And yet... somehow, it managed to keep me engaged. Maybe it's the short runtime, or the fact that the premise reminded me of The Strangers and Funny Games, both of which I enjoyed. Or maybe it's because I have a soft spot for R-rated B-movies, and this scratches that itch just enough to keep me watching.
Here's my advice: Watch the trailer. If it intrigues you, go in with low expectations, grab some friends, and maybe a few drinks. It's a ridiculous ride that's more fun when you're not taking it seriously.
