I have to admit that I watched this alone in my room after dark, blinds are broken so the window perfectly exposed. There are some issues with the movie, like they had curtains they could've closed. But that wouldn't have changed the fact that she was being watched. She could have made less ambitious decisions, but if she played everything "smart" then we wouldn't have a movie to review. Great visuals, does a great job keeping the viewer anxious and paranoid. It's probably nothing you haven't seen before, but it's still got enough creep factor to deserve a watch. Definitely not something I'd watch again, but it was well done.
I don't even like vampire shows, they're typically full of teenagers or dumb plot lines. Usually both. But this, this show its masterfully put together. The main characters are multi layered and outstandingly interesting. As a queer black person, it's absolutely crazy (in a GREAT way) to see us in these kinds of roles. The cinematography is breathtaking, the acting, the poetry. If you don't like this show simply because it isn't what you thought it would be, or because of the title, then I really don't know what to tell you. It stands on its own. I guarantee you, there is nothing else like it out there. Perfectly balanced between corny vampiric tropes and doomed love stories. Don't worry, it's also bloody and keeps you enthralled.
There is a shortage of genuinely good horror shows/movies that do not involve angsty teenagers, especially when Netflix is your main streaming service. As a grown ass woman, I've become pretty annoyed with the lack of strong and compelling adult main characters, or the need to bring children into everything in order to make it disturbing. However, in this particular series it was bearable. While they are kids, they are all on the brink of death which gives them the kind of edge that makes this conceptually entertaining. It's imperfect, and there could be more scares. The script is inconsistent, one moment the characters are extremely insightful/poetic and then others it is painfully apparent that you're watching a teenage drama. But in the moments that it isn't apparent, it's a very interesting take on horror that isn't just blood and guts or haunted house massacres.
