This movie was so well written. The main character is so well thought out and developed that I was completely engaged the entire movie. The plot was suspenseful without relying on a bunch of tired action movie tropes. Everything seemed plausible. Amazing portrayal of tradecraft. Things I had never seen or thought of before, but now I want to read more about some of the things they portrayed to see if they are true. This is definitely my favorite movie of the year so far.
I, admittedly, cringe very easily. I can't watch reality shows because the awkward conflict makes me uncomfortable. I like Tim Robinson sometimes when his outrageousness is so over the top that it's just separate from reality. In this film, he is great, as is Paul Rudd, and frankly everyone. The cringe is low key enough in most scenes to make you truly squirm. I found myself squirming far more than laughing in this movie. It was weird, wild, and unique. I liked it and it stuck with me. I am sure that the discomfort I felt watching it was the point. If you like that cringey feeling, you will really like this movie.
I had high hope for this film, but I ended up walking out halfway through all because of the terrible camera work. I saw it in XD (very large screen) and it was terrible for that. Nearly all of the shots were really , really close up and they used blurry and shaky camera effects almost nonstop. It was so distracting that I couldn't focus on the story line.
The story telling was sub-par, but functional. It was all in the execution where it fell apart. If you see this movie, sit at least 5 rows back from where you normally sit and be ready to endure some bad camera work. I was told that the shots stabilize more in the second half of the film, so maybe you'll like it more than me.
