This is a watchable and enjoyable film but ultimately left me disappointed. It has nothing of the gravitas, emotion and power of the first movie - and is full of flat performances.
Paul Mescal, in the central role, lacks any charisma or depth, worlds away from the towering figure of Maximus. His back story and the death of his wife is rushed over and you have little empathy or connection to his plight. Likewise with Pedro Pascal - a great actor who is given little dialogue and, when he does appear, seems to be only going through the motions.
Denzel Washington puts in a spirited performance as the slave-turned gladiator master, but can't simply shine on his own.
The two crazed emperors were perhaps the highlight for me, but as with anything that could be truly great in this film, they are not given the platform, script, development or back-story to properly thrive.
As for the ending, what was clearly an attempt to finish with a tear-jerking, powerful moment left me completely uninspired and feeling that, ultimately, the movie had missed an opportunity to do something really special.

Electric, gripping documentary. You won't regret watching this. Very creepy murder mystery, keeps you guessing all the way through - and indeed at the end. Told in four bingeable episodes.
How did the parents of a brainy, middle class student come to be butchered to death in their home? Was it their daughter or her mercurial German boyfriend? Can we believe either of their stories or are they each trying to cover their own tracks?
It's very well done with dramatic footage from the murder trials and a range of interviews - including Jen Soering himself. Full of colourful footage from the 80s and 90s too.
