I feared this was going to be one of those over-hyped shows that ends up disappointing, but it didn't at all. If you like romcoms with somewhat stereotyped characters, witty dialogue and sweet, culture clash romance, like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you'll love this. It's really not going to tax your brain or make you get out the tissues, but it's easy to curl up and get cosy with it for an Autumn evening's viewing. The ending is more of a turning point than a happy ever after, so there's plenty of mileage left for another season, and I'm totally on board for it. I hope Netflix can get their act together and put it into production soon, as I'm sick of waiting 2 years for another season of my favourite shows!
At the start, I thought hated it. The overt anachronisms, ridiculous fantasy elements, and conscious attempt to shock with body humour and bad language made me think this was just going to be another puerile, brainless historical farce. But I have to admit, some great performances from the two veteran comedy actors (Rob Brydon and Anna Chancellor), kept me from turning it off. By the end of the episode I was interested enough to give the second episode a watch. By the end of that, I'd bought into the premise, was totally on board with the silliness, and thoroughly enjoying the chemistry between the two leads. No, it's not a historical drama, it's more like alternate history and historical fantasy. If you take it for what it's meant to be, it's a very enjoyable watch. And the romance is swoon worthy enough for me to want a second season to give them a happy ever after.
