First of all, Ralph Fiennes acting is a treat. He lets the viewer to feel what is the meaning of the word 'burden'. Stanley Tucci's character is pleasant to observe as well, but I wish he had more screen time and more dialogues for the story to be told from a different angle (and there are plenty of options to show us that).
As for the plot, it lacks refinement and complexity for a proper political thriller. Every plot twist is expected. Even the last one, and might I say it spoils the treat. You can see the ending miles away, but you think "oh, that would be too cliche to happen"... Well despite that it is exactly what happenes :(
The other drawback for the chosen genre, is that there is no grey morale, complex personalities, or unexpected character development. There are obvious good characters and bad characters and it doesn't change even a little through the narrative development.
The movie definitely worth watching, but don't set your hopes too high. There's no exquisite tension, there are no stunning decorations, the soundtrack fits the picture but doesn't emphasize it in any way.
That is a solid B, which could be turned into an A- easily if the writers would have bravery to step further from the literature base.

Almost everything we like in Grand Tour is non present.
Live and unscripted dialogues (they only had a direction in TG / GT) are replaced with a soulless reading from a prompter. Even the "jokes" and "verbal lunges" feel so plain and artificial, that I couldn't smile even once.
Instead of 3 emotionally arguing men we got 2 boring old dudes reading a script.
THERE IS NO NEW FOOTAGE AT ALL. We could see some behind the scenes cuts, or the material that was edited out before, but instead of that amazon production team showed us exactly same shorts that we have seen before. And those were not even the most thrilling ones!
Very very very lazy job. Very poorly done. There is something of 5-10 minutes of new video (May and Hammond dialogues) in a hour long recompilation of old material.
The only person who would have enjoyed watching this is the one who has never seen the original Grand Tour series. I was so much into a new release and I have got that one... It feels somewhat as mix of a spit in the face and arrogant charity donation.
I am disappointed by that more, than by any season of new crews in Top Gear. It feels THAT BAD.

It's very hard for me to imagine a Chinese society on the west Coast in the end of 18th century behave like it's pictured here. It was a very traditional and patriarchal society, with strong respect towards the elders, with a lot of subordination. None of that is here: a woman can easily talk in front of a man, a whore can address the gang leader without a bow. Everybody is walking around throwing "shieeet" and "phuuuuuck" left and right. All the Chinese folks are speaking English between each other (I am not amazed, since there are almost no actors speaking Cantonese or Mandarin).
All the characters and behavioral patterns are grabbed straight from 21st century and shoved into the decorations of an 18th one.
Martial arts are presented pleasant to watch, actors are acting, decorations are nice but the plot and dialogues are rubbish.
Quality of a disproportion between the technical side of the show and it's writing is very close to the latest Castlevania Noir.
