The first MEGAN movie was silly fun, but not very good sci-fi. Heavy on the silly. But still, entertaining.
This sequel is far more interesting. A meaty story with new backstory and real detail. However, I feel it was around 20 minutes too long. There were plenty of peripheral parts that could have been omitted. If this was around an hour and 30 or 40 minutes I think I would have rated it an 8. FX were great, acting was great, casting was great.
If you're very precious about your sci-fi and/or you're a run of the mill misogynist who knee-jerk hates on films led by women, you may find reason to be contrarian and look down on this.
But if you enjoy sci-fi and action because they're fun and you also appreciate some good story and world building without prejudice, you'll surely enjoy this one.

The entire time I watched this film I just kept imagining the many ways to nip the situation in the bud that seem to escape the main character. It comes down to bad writing. Of course you can't have conflict if things are easy to solve, and therefore no film. But after the tenth time ty at calling the police would have solved everything, I got angry. This is just torture. It's not horror, or drama, or a thriller. It's just annoying torture. Don't do what I did - you really don't need to stick it out til the end just because you started watching it. If you're looking this up on IMDb mid-watch to see if it gets any better, it doesn't. Try something else.
Dan Stevens and Al Pacino. Come here. I just want to talk.
Why on earth did you make this movie? You're both so much better than this script. It's empty, reductive; and most of all, boring. It's a fine vehicle for someone like Patricia Heaton, who played one note on Everybody Loves Raymond and failed to sustain a career after. She does quite a lot of lip quivering in this. Really stretched her range.
But real actors like Pacino and Stevens are wasted on this hour and 38 minutes snoozefest.
I'm by no means an Exorcist purist. I like the original film of course. But I don't canonize it. This retelling was unnecessary and it fails to do anything substantial. It doesn't inform or entertain.
