Get ready for an emotional and deeply interesting storyline, with amazing wellwritin characters and plottwists. And artistic touches like cameraeffects and colorgrading that makes for a truely memorable film.
But i think it becomes a little too artzy. The film is set in a steampunk world with future technology but old fashioned style. With big parts of the story relying heavily on science experiments. Some of which remind me too much of "Mars Attacks". Silly sci-fi science that I can't take seriously though it playes a minuscule part in the film. But in my case my brain gets a bit weary of the exceedingly new and unexplained concepts of the story. Maybe they should have drawn more concepts from reality that wouldn't leave you questioning parts of the film that don't matter. An example can also be the CGI. There is both great and bad CGI. The bad being an instance of a fake sky. It was obviously fake looking flat and having unrealistic colors. Too much world building can be a problem.
The story is dark and not family friendly, taking some unforeseen but wierdly realistic turns. We follow two main storylines. One unfortunately being much more explored than the other. I would have loved to see more of Willem Dafoe's and Ramy Youssef's characters in exchange for leaving out some less important parts of the main story. That would greatly boost the viewers attachment to Max McCandles. Something i think is missing. But overall a mesmerizing story that explores morale, ethics and biology.
Another less amazing part was the music. At first i found it interesting, but later it annoyed me a bit. Especially the high violin, that would occationally play was tirering. People with sensitive ears, or that just don't like sound of the kind, be warned. It is very untraditionel and a tad disturbing. It fits the theme somewhat but I would prefer some scenes to be scilent.
But overall definitely worth watching and analysing if you are into that. It is very much available for interpretation.
I give it a 7,6 / 10.
