My expectations were admittedly very low. I'm happy to say I enjoyed Superman and I'm glad I saw it in theaters (although there isn't anything special that made it necessary to see on the big screen). Gunn's obvious and often forced humor style often falls flat - Hoult is perhaps the only actor that makes it land every time - and some of the casting choices were... interesting. But, overall, it's a watchable movie and a good time. The pacing is good after a few slower scenes at the beginning, it has one of the best Lex Luthor depictions in all screen media, and the character interactions manage to work well. While there are definitely things I think could have been done differently, I'll watch it again when it's streaming, and I'd recommend it to comic book fans (even if it's only to see a good Lex and Jim Lee's name in the credits)!!
Disclaimer: I'm one of the few people that LOVES the other documentary episodes.
Yet... This one made me want to give up on the show as a whole. Season 7 has contained some of the worst writing I've ever seen, a devastating lack of character development and narrative story arcs, and the most atrocious inconsistencies and procedural inaccuracies. This episode makes the rest of s7 seem like good television. I genuinely do not know how the series got renewed after this premiered. I complained about the episode prior, and apparently the showrunners somehow knew I would and tried to make it worse. Alexi, please do better for the fans and for the actors bringing these characters to life.
