Despite excellent cast and interpretations, masterful cinematography and good direction, this adaptation is somewhat a miss. I'm afraid that too many people will not understand "the message" therein and all the symbolism in the story. Reverse order of telling is understandable, since Act 3 is so confusingly far fetched and surreal, getting more coherent towards the end (Act 2 and 1, respectfully), so audience will "forget". It's the story, not the movie. The film only follows the narrative. King has much better works than this (Hearts in Atlantis, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile ...), although the imaginativeness can not be disputed. Not for the masses.
So, instead of simply continuing at the same moment the Part 1 ends, the plot "drops in" some time later (months? Years?). In the meantime, this Entity entity keeps playing around and our heroes grow hair, weariness, wrinkles and whatnot, waiting for Godot/paint to dry. Finally, US saves the world (of course, everyone else is small fry), having Afro-American woman (and obviously not Republican) for President (nice touch but not happening soon). All in all, fun somewhat, too long, and snotty ending, desperately trying to provoke tears of thankfulness and joy. What's not to like? It seems that for "some actors" Scientology pays. Too bad the reality is quite the opposite. Waiting for new Bond in progress ...
Once again: America's another attempt to have their own James Bond fails. I believe that cultural differences are too big. Bond is perfect working Joe. Hunt is a all-mighty superhero, American style. Now that the Part II is out, I was forced to watch this Part I again, just to connect the dots (in general) and find disappointment. It still all looks like a Tom Cruise self promotion (Look, mama, I'm a man of age and still can drive the bicycle with no hands!), furnished with tons of action and special effects, but without much else (especially sense). Story full of plot holes size of the Boötes Void, non-developed characters, thin plot, and so on. Good camera work, editing and some actors (Pom Clementieff, Esai Morales, Shea Wingham, Rebecca Ferguson), though. Unfortunately, we lost one of the most beautiful women that walks the Earth. All in all, barely 6/10. Let's now see what the Part II brings.
