  • A Movie that could've been Great, but is just Good...

After all the amazing trailers the movie had and as someone who grew up with the original movies (which are still guilty pleasures of mine), I was very much anticipating the release of this flick. And so, I went to watch it opening week. However, I left the theater dissapointed in the finished product.

"The Fantastic Four: First Steps" skips the long introduction of the character's origins and shows us an already fully established team of superpowered humans, who are treated like celebrities in their retro-esque universe. However, things become uncertain when the world is threatened by an all-powerful ancient being, Galactus, and the family has to race against time to stop the seemingly inevitable apocalypse.

The synopsis and the trailers set up something that seemed fresh and different. The plotpoint that The Fantastic Four, for the first time is feeling powerless as they also start to loose the trust and hope of the people who genuinely worship them sounded incredibly captivating. However, only a small portion of that was in the final product and it quickly gets thrown out for another generic and clichéd "saving the world" storyline that isn't bad by any means, but feels all too familiar and overshadowed by what could've been something new.

I have to say I wasn't quite impressed by the characters either. Altough the family dynamic worked, the team members felt way too undeveloped for the viewer to truly care about, making the movie's emotional parts miss. I wasn't convinced by the acting either, especially that of the Storm siblings. Vanessa Kirby seemed to deliver all her lines in an incredibly monotone way that I didn't find convincing, while Joseph Quinn, in my opinion just didn't fit Johnny's cocky personality. Galactus, altough visually pleasing to look at, also lost its intimidating factor quite quickly and had some dumb moments during the final showdown.

The movie's greatest strength is definitely the visuals. The high-tech retro setting is beautiful, including the set and costume designs. The CGI also looks much better than what's expected of Marvel nowadays, especially the visual effects for The Thing which look almost lifelike. The score and sound design is a standout too.

Overall, altough not a bad movie, especially when talking about visuals, "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" falls into the superhero cliché trap and fails to provide anything unique to the genre storywise. In the end, its greatest weakness is what it could've been...

  • A new classic for all the wrong reasons

I watched 'A Minecraft Movie' opening day expecting to just turn off my brain and have fun. I got to say, the movie failed to reach even the lowest of expectations, but even still, the audience managed to save the entire experience by their enthusiasm coming from all the memes. There was a lot of cheering and there were multiple people shouting in now iconic lines such as "Chicken Jockey!" and "Flint and Steel!". But from a purely film standpoint, it's a really weak flick.

Now, there isn't a lot that actually works here. The set design and visuals are genuinely mind blowing and hats off to all the people who worked on it. The movie did have some cool nostalgia bait references that did manage to connect with me and I would lie if I said I didn't chuckle a few times during the film.

However, this movie is as basic as you can get when it comes to a clichéd and uninteresting story. There wasn't anything to grasp onto, the characters were all incredibly shallow, unfunny stereotypes and the pacing felt painfully messy. The script is just very weak and has nothing to really offer the viewers. The jokes were mostly quite unfunny and a lot of times genuinely cringe, especially the random Jack Black musical numbers. I understand what kind of message they were going for with the movie and it's a great one, but they really failed the execution and everything just fell flat.

But let's be real here: this movie is not made for people who have grown up with Minecraft, it's for young kids. It's unfair to judge it when in fact, I probably would've lost my mind if I saw this at my young minecrafter age. And if the film makes children happy, then it's worthy of existing. And for us... we'll have to do with the smiles it has given us due to the memes.

  • A great set-up for an ultimately dissapointing experience

Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17 seemed like the perfect movie to watch in theaters. It's an original movie, from a great writer which had an interesting concept and looked like great fun! Well, all of that is only present in the first section of the movie...

The story follows Mickey Barnes, a person trying to flee earth by signing up to be an expendable, having to die over and over again for the benefit of researchers. Hovewer, things get complicated when he survives an alien encounter he was expected to die in. This results in the production of a new Mickey, which generates a wide range of new problems for the 2 simultaneously living clones.

The way this entire storyline is introduced and set up in the first half of the movie really grabs the viewers attention. Being an expendable whose entire job is to die is a uniquely interesting concept. Watching it unfold and getting to know the character is engaging and overall just excellent.

But things quickly start crumbling when Mickey 18 is introduced. It seems like the writer just did not know what to do afterwards. The cloning storyline is entirely thrown away and instead we get pointless side-stories that are just not even remotely interesting. It seems like the movie tries to randomly squeeze in so many things at once, when in truth, none of them should be in the movie. And the actually interesting concepts and themes are just left in the bin. Some things are never even explained, like why different mickeys have such drastically different personalities. It's not what you'd expect after having such a strong base to build on. The rest of the film just ultimately becomes a drag, with one generic scene after another.

The visuals are okay... it's not a beautiful looking movie by any means and does not set any new standards. The acting in this movie is just very off-putting. On one hand you have Robert Pattinson, playing not one, but two different characters. He gives it his all and gives an incredible performance. However, his top tier acting just highlights the contrast between him and his co-stars. No one even came close to his skills in this movie, which made all the other actors feel shallow and soulless. I believe Mark Ruffalo was especially terrible in this film. Of course his character wasn't suppossed to be taken seriously, but he really overacted this one, which just made him aggrivating and annoying to watch. The dialogue doesn't help either. It is incredibly cheesy and on the nose, and the actors' line deliveries just make it painful to watch at times.

Overall, Mickey 17 is not the worst movie I've ever seen, and not a bad movie either. It's just a dissapointingly mid feature thaz could've been way better, especially from someone like Bong Joon Ho.
