I was excited to finally watch this as it's a somewhat iconic British comedy. I barely made it through the viewing it was so irritating and not funny at all.
Mr. Porter is a railroad employee who has bumbled - or bungled - his way through several positions. He remains employed only because his sister is married to the managing director. He's finally shuffled out of the way to a position as station master of a remote train station in Ireland. He inherits two employees played by Moore Marriott and Graham Moffatt. Marriott, Moore, and Hay appeared as a trio several times in films. While Mr Porter tries to improve the station he encounters a group of gun runners.
Not only was nothing funny in this movie, but the constant screechy voices and screaming were unbearably irritating. This is the second Will Hay film I've watched and I don't get why he's lauded as a comedy great. British cinema is rich with comedic actors. I can probably name dozens from pre 1960 cinema whose performances and films are reliably funny. Maybe this type of thing appeals to children.
