Like seriously what the heck was this? This was such a unique and messed up experience on so many levels. It doesnt feel like anything that Lanthimos has made before and that's a good thing because man this hooked me... for the most part. Yeah ima go ahead and say that the first chunk of the film before the journey begins was kinda cringe but once you look past that it's a wondrous, transcendent experience. Emma Stone and all her costars do an excellent job, the set and costume design is exceptional, and the plot is unpredictable and sometimes hysterical, especially at the end. There's also some good themes Yorgos spreads throughout but that doesn't matter that's not what we're here for. So yeah go watch this its epic.
I saw recently "Boy Kills World" which was also a directorial debut from Moritz Mohr, which was basically this but more colorful and not as good, and I gotta say: "Man if I had a nickel for how many times a directorial debut about a one man army came out in April, I would have 2 nickels! Which isnt a lot but its kinda weird it happened twice!" Dev Patel killed it with his directorial debut, which is steeped in Hindu culture which gives it a unique depth to it, and Dev Patel certainly helps, even if it takes a while for his acting to kick in. Once it does though, MAN it hits. The action here is also extra viceral and raw, and it helps that Dev can actually do martial arts himself. As well the camera shots are super creative and well done. So yeah, hopefully he does stuff on the same calibre of greatness as this for his next project.
An excellent Sci-Fi sequel that delivers everything it promises. With stunning characters, a grand scale, and brilliant visual effects, this could truly go down as the Star Wars of the next generation. The first Dune movie had a grand sense of scale and scope that was almost unparalleled up to that point, on top of delivering incredible moments such as everything involving the Sandworms, as well as having incredible characters played by talented actors. This feels like an upgrade in every sense, and it makes me super excited for the future of Denis Villeneuve, who I have not seen many films of before but I am dying to check out the rest of his filmography now.
