This is a way to setup the finale. With a disappointing previous episode, Dexter somehow manages to pull off this poetic masterpiece of an episode. As I'm writing this, I'm literally shivering from the final scene. I stared in disbelief at the screen for a good minute after the episode, and this may be one of the greatest episodes in the whole franchise.
While this non-idealistic and non-realistic story unfolds, I'm constantly perplexed as to how others are rating these episodes so high. The writers seemingly have made Dexter a multi-layered persona that we will attempt to justify due to "well, he gets more human every season"; I find that just such a poor excuse. Dexter writers have lost their direction, and ultimately, we have received this as a result.
I'm dumbfounded by how this poor excuse of a major plot point has achieved such a high rating. You are placed into a tense situation after 4x11 just for Rita to be conveniently left alone while Dexter coincidentally doesn't know where Arthur is. Furthermore, there is no sense of direction and is just chasing around a mere old guy for 50 minutes. This is the inauguration of a poorly executed character arc that marks a very preventable downfall in show quality. I'm not surprised by the outcome of this episode, and nor should you. It's the most predictable thing that could've happened and is a very lazy attempt at something major.
