This show's rating is inflated, because normal people don't really sit and watch this kind of show all the way through. The audience is mostly adolescent young people who lack the wisdom to judge this show. They are easily influenced by the extremities it offers. I started watching this show only because of the rating and it showed me that you always have to account in the target demographics while evaluating a show by its rating. Admittedly, I only watched around 1 episodes, but that was enough to see that the show manifestly tends to extremes to adopt this strategy I mentioned. And it does not care to do it in a realistic way by any means. It's been a while but I have been thinking about this since I saw it so I wanted to offer a different kind of opinion here. The show maybe isn't that terrible but I'm giving it two stars based on what I've seen, because I hate the strategy it adopts.

You can tell that Cobra Kai was put together as a passion project. This is evident from the fact that they included even the most obscure actors from 30 years ago.

The show builds onto the standards of the original trilogy, which was definitely necessary to make the show interesting. I really like the way they structured the show. It's a bit corny, but it absolutely manages to deliver on what it tries to. Surely there are not so realistic parts of it, but many foolish mistakes I see on other shows just don't exist in this one. There is some "teen drama" in the show and I think it is kept acceptable.

And the fighting choreographies were surprisingly good for some reason.

This show had an insanely huge headstart for two reasons. First one is the fact that it's about characters that many people already know and love from the game, which makes them already somehow invested in the story. Secondly, the extreme amount of animation budget that was spent in the making, yielding top level results right from the start.

Given these two points, it is easy to be overhyped even after finishing watching, failing to recognize the show for what it actually is. I wish I could say the plot was able to build onto those. The very first episodes did a great job creating the universe, but then it slowly turned into a mess.

You can tell a number of writers took part in the writing and there was not really much of a coordination between those. The result was a lot of incoherent plot lines with inconsistencies all around. I recognize the effort of some skillful writers, but they were evidently the minority.

Another thing the show depends on is the "feel good" factor that comes from the music videos, instead of offering any actual depth or ingenuity. Unfortunately, this seems to have worked so far, inciting the showmakers to continue. If they don't change anything, people will start to realize the lackluster parts, and the ratings will certainly diminish in the following seasons. I don't even know if the whole thing is even salvageable anymore, because of the lousy plot development.
