  • The Diplomat -- a compelling and thought-provoking watch

The Diplomat, a never before title in Bollywood directed by Shivam Nair, released in April 2025, is a gripping political thriller that delves into themes of diplomacy, strained bilateral relations, and the personal struggles of diplomats.

The movie is based on the real-life escape of Uzma Ahmed (Sadia Khateeb) from Pakistan, aided by JP Singh (John Abraham), a steadfast and pragmatic diplomat. It recounts Uzma's harrowing experience of being forced into marriage and held captive in Buner, Pakistan, in 2017.

Unlike the high-octane action films that have dominated Bollywood for the last two decades, The Diplomat takes a more grounded and realistic approach, offering an insightful look into embassy dynamics and diplomatic challenges. Stories centered on long-standing geopolitical tensions often resonate deeply when executed with diligence, and this film is no exception-especially as it stands out for being an original production rather than a remake.

The movie successfully keeps audiences engaged despite its linear storytelling devoid of major twists and turns. It proves that star power isn't necessary to create a compelling narrative-what matters is the authenticity of performances. John Abraham, despite his athletic physique that contrasts with typical diplomats, delivers a convincing portrayal, while Revathy, in a small but significant role, leaves a lasting impact. The cinematography beautifully captures the mountainous landscapes, and the music complements the film without relying on overpowering soundtracks.

A particularly thought-provoking moment arises in the judicial verdict, which fails to punish Uzma Ahmed's husband despite the trauma he inflicted upon her. Additionally, the absence of an order for the perpetrator's detainment until Uzma safely crosses into India -- which seems to be ignored --raises concerns about potential obstacles during the repatriation process, despite police escort.

Despite a few logical inconsistencies, The Diplomat remains a compelling and thought-provoking watch, offering a rare glimpse into the nuanced world of diplomacy.

  • Tiresome to eyes

Sorop I think has an interesting story idea that has not been developed before. If the things in the red book about Sorop and the fasting that was mentioned therein are crafted in a more detailed scenes, then the audience will know something new in the context of Javanese folk beliefs; as to why kids are not allowed to be outside of the house during dusk.

When there is a unique village story depicted, I think people would still throng to movie halls; let alone the mushrooming horror film production in Indonesia.

Something black that flows out of the mouth is to me quite disgusting.

Unfortunately, the story of Sorop was picturized for too long in the dark with quite a lot of jump scares that resulted in no goosebumps at all. Repetition of the same scene after scene without development on the story board to a new level caused tiresome to the eyes. Having said that, there could also be a slight psychological disturbance among the viewers which I suppose could have given rise to a feeling of boredom.

  • Valavanukku Vallavan a popular Tamil thriller in 1960s

Vallavanukku Vallavan (1965) should not be translated as Expert of All Experts, rather Capable/Strongest of (All/Other) Capable Persons.

Vallavanukku Vallavan was a remake of Hindi movie (Ustadon ke Ustad -1963) highlighting about the life of 4 men (vallavan) with different characters where a usual villain becoming hero and vice versa; an unusual treat indeed for the viewers in those days.

The movie is one that people will remember easily at the first place when talking about the then popular Tamil film producer, Modern Theatres Ltd.

I like the credit title of the movie developing from a door with steps becoming bigger to the size of the screen, shaping the number 100, with a catchy background music.

It is the 100th movie of MTL which had a successful 100 days run (or maybe more), unlike many actors 100th movies that had usually failed for unclear reasons.

The songs by music director Vedha are very popular till date though some may be ripped off from Hindi hits. I like the song "manam ennum medai mele" for its melodious tune and beautiful lyrics by poet Kannadasan.

You can still go for it today if you like old B/W thriller....
