It's crazy to even rate this short movie. But, WOW. It is truly traumatizing like a lot of people say. This is brilliant for a student movie. It has some similar vibes as internet horror which leaves you with a "wtf just happened" moment. The subject is present and clear from the start and makes the whole story so exceptionally uncomfortable. If you are triggered by abusive households then I don't think this is the movie for you. The relationships inside the family feel real because of the great performance and it makes the whole expierince that more frightening. It is truly the peak of psychological horror with great execution. The true horror is that this is a thing that happens in reality.
The theme's and technology of Bête Noire are a bit absurd but pretty entertaining. The story is a bit slow. However I do enjoy narratives where the main characters seems delusional because no one else believes them even though we as the viewer know they are right. It's very effective in making the viewer feeling equally as frustrated as the character. This episode did remind me more of Joan Is Awful in its humor and absurd mind blowing ending. It doesn't make all the much sense but I also don't really hate it. I must add that I was a big fan of the dramatic and over the top transitions with the organ, very theatrical. There were also some similarities to the "the other black girl" on Hulu. If you loved this you might also enjoy that office thriller.
The pace of the story goes by smoothly and picks up at the right times. It keeps you invested by "upgrading" the technology we are introduced to at the start of the episode. It's a dark comedy for sure as the tone of the episode switches between sudden sex jokes and then goes back into the real horrors of barely passing by with their payload. This story does feel like realistic scenario that I could see happening in out future. It feels like the right time to release this episode as we are in a economical crisis and subscriptions are on the rise. Everything seems to get a premium version and it just makes you go crazy. Well..what if they put a subscription on your loved ones?
