  • Really Interesting & Mind-Provoking

I like how intriguing this movie is. It also shows how much social status and how you're perceived by others matter. In this movie, Patrick Bateman is constantly trying to one-up his coworkers, and that leads to jealousy and ultimately, his murders out of joy of being in control.

I like the intro. I think it's really captivating while also subtly foreshadowing what the movie is going to be about. All of the exquisite plates, his friends, overall what he surrounds himself in. You can immediately get a grasp of what the main problem is going to be. Besides that, the cinematography of the foods and everything also looks very pleasant and nice.

It's kind of funny how the movie is unironically making fun of some men trying so hard to be really masculine (A. K. A men who have a really fragile masculinity). Patrick having a 40 step skin care routine, always paying attention to his appearance and also how he's seen by others, he is always comparing himself with others to proof he's better, and a slight nudged from someone gay will ruin his entire demeanor. Aside from this, I also really like how they wrote his narcissistic character. I think it's portrayed really well. For example how he has a big ego that one simple inconvenience will ruin his entire mood, his fake practiced smiles, his persona. I think Christian Bale captured the essence of his character really well.

I especially love how this movie itself is narcissistic. It never delved into any of the other characters. The center of attention is always Patrick. And nothing ever goes wrong for him (in a way). It's as if Patrick himself wrote this movie. It really helps with making you feel emotionally-attached to the movie.

Aside from that, I love all of the actors here. They're great. In my opinion, none of the scenes felt still or awkward. All of the acting felt natural.

The ending is a little confusing. But I like how it leaves it to the reader to interpret what happened. It leaves a lot to discuss about the movie, thus, making you more highly-invested in it.

(SPOILERS FROM HERE!!!) I'd like to think Patrick did kill everyone here, including Paul Allen. But he didn't kill any of those cops, all of that chase scene didn't happen (even Patrick himself was surprised when the police car exploded like some superhero movie). He imagined all of it, from the moment the ATM machine told him to insert the cat. All of that adrenaline altered his perception. In the movie, we're shown that some of the characters here mistake others as someone else. So it's very likely Patrick's attorney mistook Paul Allen for someone else.

Overall, this movie is very interesting and entertaining. I wouldn't mind watching it again (but will definitely skip those bed scenes...).

  • Setting a New Standard

For an Indonesian film, this is really good. The animation is good, both 2d and 3d. The colors in the movie were very vibrant, but when it gets serious, the colors decrease in saturation. The voice acting is nice. The music is amazing. The story is told like a children's book, but it also teaches valuable life lessons.

The 2d animation is really nice. It feels like we're watching a kid's story telling. As for the 3d animation, I liked how smooth it was. Especially the hair texture. It looks very fluffy, like a brush. But one thing about it, I feel like whenever the characters are excited or angry, the emotions showing on their faces lacked a bit of exaggeration. But when they're happy and cheerful, it's quite expressive.

The voice acting is nice and natural. But it irked me out when the voice in the beginning of the movie started sounding like those asmr videos. I get the vision, they're trying to make it calming like a bedtime story, but that type of voice is just not my cup of tea.

The songs are AMAZING! Every time a song came on, it just lifted up my mood a lot. Whoever is in charge of the songs in this movie, they should be given a raise. The songs they were playing in the movie are so catchy I would unironically put it in my playlist.

I like how they show the mentality of children. How easily swayed they are to their selfishness, and how their emotions are uncontrollable and unstable because... they're children, not adults. Some stories write the children too mature, but this movie nicely encapsulated the stubbornness of children, and how they slowly change and shape their personality better through what life and parental figures taught them.

I also like how they give each main characters a personality, as well as their own quirks. And flaws. It makes them feel a bit more human, and it also makes you invested in watching what they would do.

Some of the things that happened in the story is a bit unrealistic, but then again it's a children's movie. Although, it had a beautiful message. The story tells us how important it is to care for others, and how we shouldn't be too selfish. It also highlights the importance to let go and how holding on to the past could damage the things around us, including ourselves. It also taught us the importance of realizing the things we've done wrong, apologizing, and forgiving. Not only was this movie very imaginative, it also gave life lessons. I like when children movies aren't just entertaining, but also teaches a valuable lesson.

    (SPOILERS AHEAD!!)

Out of all the main characters, I feel like only Jumbo and Atta really got a character development. Which is good since in some movies, only the main character really got a development while the other side characters stayed the same. I do wish the others also have a little bit of character development, but having more than one character development is already good enough.

When the antagonist -- the village chief --appeared, they should've given him some sort of effect or aura like the wolf from puss in the boots. It would've made him more scary and intimidating. They could've toned it down since they don't want to scare the children, but it would've been great.

  • Great Start, Fell Off Midway

As a thriller, this movie is amazing. It really made me tense in some scenes to the point I didn't even want to look at the screen. The actors are also amazing. Sometimes some build up tension is ruined by the actors but most of the actors here actually helped with making the scenes even more intense. They executed the scenes well. The music for this song is awesome. Most of them are very catchy. Despite not being horror, I find this story to be very scary in a psychological way. Ghosts and other spirits might be scary, but nothing is scarier than mankind. Everything that happened in this movie could happen in real life, and I find that makes the story much more scarier.

The intro to the movie is amazing. It made me intrigued, it looked promising. But then a huge time jump happened (17 years) and the story starts falling apart from there. At first, it was about racism. Then as the story progresses, it starts to focus less and less on the racism; instead, it starts focusing on gore, brutality and the violence. I can tell they were trying to tell a message, but it falls short as the ending was shown abruptly. Many questions were unanswered and yet the story already ended. Maybe they were trying to show the dangers of racism, but I would've preferred if the ending had a complete conclusion to the story instead of just ending it when there's so many unexplained things.

    (spoiler warning from here!!)

I really don't like how the two girls (the only girls in the story) immediately fell in love with the mc at first sight. Don't get me started on this pick-me teacher. If they made her a strong type of woman that's independent and can fight on her own, that would've made the story more interesting. But instead, she's obviously just a female love candidate for Edwin and she does nothing to help him. She studies psychology and it was never utilized. It's such a missed opportunity. If she could've done something useful rather than just waiting and depending on Edwin, it would've made the story and their dynamic much more interesting.

The other one is the girl Edwin met at the bar. She was an obvious love candidate for Edwin too. Cheering him up, and then getting upset when she saw him bringing another woman in the bar, only to disappear forever from the story after that. I wish the story gave an explanation to what happened to her, otherwise this scene just feels unnecessary and adds nothing to whole plot. If you're going to introduce a character that's going to disappear after two scenes, might as well not add them. (Do they know about The Bechdel Test...)

I do like the shaky camera effect when Jeffrey was bullying the random student. It makes it seem like we're watching a live video of a bullying. Though some of the camera angles are a bit awkward. During the time when Edwin was talking to his sister, it was supposed to be emotional. But the awkward cuts and pause from the sister talking to just a shot of Edwin with tears in his eyes just felt very stiff. Some of the scene change was also very sudden and didn't flow smoothly with the previous scene.

The way they were stalling the door scene for so long actually makes me so sick of it. At this point, I'm begging them to just kick down the door. I know they're terrified, but they couldn't utilize all of that time behind the door to actually searching the room for exits? Instead of just going back and forth arguing with Jeffrey, and being like "I should open the door," "No, you shouldn't!" again and again. I wish the tension could've been spread into other locations as well instead of spending what felt to be like 45 minutes behind the door.

Some of the sfx were a bit much. It sounded too gore-y in a way I can't explain well with words. The vfx for the blood splatters as well. It was too exaggerated. The way the blood splatters like hand sanitizer spray when they were being slashed with a long knife... It was unnatural and not very realistic.

I wish there was subtitles for this movie. Some of the words they were saying weren't that clear, I just had to assume what is happening. I don't know if every movie theater is the same, but mine didn't have any subtitles.

Finally, the questions that were left unanswered in the end of the movie. First, how did a child get into an abandoned place and saved the student that was being bullied at the start? I understand they were trying to portray how, despite their differences, they helped each other. But it just felt so sudden and it doesn't make any sense why a child would wander into an abandoned place all alone and coincidentally know which door to unlock to save the student. Next, what happened to the bar? What happened to some of the other characters in this movie? Like the principal for example. He never appeared again after expelling Jeffrey. What happened to Christo and the teacher when they escaped? They disappeared after that. Especially the most important question, who is Edwin's nephew? Maybe it was answered in the end but it wasn't that clear (since, again, my movie theater did not have any subtitles) so I'm assuming it's Jeffrey? I'm still confused.

Overall, the movie is really great as a thriller. The actors are also great. But I wished they could've told the story better, and especially for the ending. I wish it had a complete conclusion instead of leaving the viewers hanging.
