We finally return to catch up with our four friends in MDR, but this episode suffers from lack of major plot advancement for being so late in the season. The show has so little character development this season compared to last. We've gotten some background information, and that's fine, but I feel like the plot-driven aspect has slowed down compared to season one. If the show isn't plot-driven, and has mostly stopped being character-driven too, then what's left? The mystery? That's it? The mystery alone isn't enough to make a great show, but that's pretty much all the show has been for the majority of the last handful of episodes. It's getting frustrating.
While I fully understand the need to have more background on Harmony Cobel, this episode really stretched this out into about 20 minutes of unnecessary footage. The reveal at the end was OK, it just took FOREVER to get there and felt like this could have been worked into another episode.
While I think it's possible that this episode will fit into the timeline better once the season has concluded, it felt like a lot of unnecessary filler. Kier employs child labor? Yes, we already knew that from Ms. Huang. It has been previously established that Lumon is an evil corporation and we have plenty of examples of that in previous episodes. That they ruined a small town and employed children is not a shock and an unnecessary device to advance the plot.
I think this is the worst episode of Severance so far, but by no means "unwatchable".
