'Daggers Inn', by Caroline Spence and James Smith was the closing film at Southend Film Festival on the 8th June.
The story begins with a young woman Donna Revan (Anna Danvers) investigating the murder of her sister in a bleak village.
The murdered woman's body was found in a lake.
The local law firm plan to silence Donna. Their various 'employees' track Donna to her lodgings, the titular 'Daggers Inn'.
However, Donna is not defenceless and has resources of her own.
Although 'Daggers Inn' has elements of comedy, it also has an undercurrent of menace and the supernatural running through it.
The film is well directed, written and edited.
It makes good use of its chilly and isolated rural settings.
'Horror on Sea' regulars Eve Oliver, Martin W Payne, Gavin Gordon, amongst others and Terry Bamberger also star.
'Daggers Inn' is well worth a second look.

'In the grip of Terror' premiered at the Romford Film Festival 2025.
It is the first collaboration between Laurie Brewster's 'Hex'/British Horror Studio and the Subotsky family, the heirs of Amicus.
Four people are summoned to a decaying hospital by the mysterious Doctor Graves who knows about their history.
One, a junior doctor, Doctor Marcher (Dorian Todd), agrees to a self-serving wager to spend the night with a dead patient in a dank locked room.
Another, young nurse Charlotte Gibbons (Megan Tremethick), sneaks on to the so-called 'One Way Ward' for seemingly terminally-ill patients.
A late arrival for the mysterious doctor's summoning is Doctor Hawyer(Nick Ford). He quickly become obsessed with a missing colleague's experiments on disturbed patients.
'In the grip of Terror' is a serious horror film with it's interconnected stories.
It is set in a supposedly distant past where 'disturbed' and dying patients were kept out of sight.
However, 'Hex'/British Horror Studio' have put their own stamp on the Amicus classics.
The gothic dungeon-like rooms and studies are like those of 'Slave and the Sorceror, and the recent 'Reign of Queen Ginnarra' Those film actors Megan Tremethick, Dorian Todd along with Peter Mahoney, Michael Daviot, Jonathan Handler and others have done a great job with 'In the grip of Terror'.
The film doesn't overstay its welcome and will hopefully bring back the Golden Age of British Horror.

After the slaying of his father, the king, Prince Eldoran (Andrew Gourlay)flees his kingdom.
The latter is now under the control of his sister Queen Ginnarra (Megan Tremethick), and through her, dark forces.
The Queen sends her brutal henchmen to torture and slowly kill her brother.
Although the Prince survives the attacks, he suffers betrayals as he re-enters his father's kingdom to free it from his sister.
Certainly more epic than director Laurie Brewster and main star Megan Tremethick's 2024 comedic 'Slave and the Sorceror', 'Queen Ginnarra' doesn't have the same cathartic resolution.
The special effects are on a par with television/cinema offerings.
The acting, especially the fight scenes are quite believable.
It's evident that a lot of time and effort has been devoted to the film by everyone involved.
