This is a sad film. The characters screw and disrespect each other. It shows the worst traits of "city people" such as lies, greed, selfishness, abuse, harassment, and sexism. I think(or hope rather) that the idea of the authors was to depict a spectre of personalities with different qualities, beliefs and to what kind of future they lead. What concerns me the most it's the lack of tact when it comes balance between comedy and drama. The truly dismal moments are shown in a so nonchalant way with a joke following shortly. That just doesn't work for me.
Although the film contains a lot of funny scenes, portrayal of soviet life is not bad, I cannot like this movie.

This movie so blatantly wants to make you cry. It uses all the available drama tropes out there. So manipulative and it doesn't hide this, it's really on the surface.
But since I have some empathy in me, the movie has succeeded. The experience of watching it left me heartbroken. It's full of raw emotion, super expressive and I must say it is very much an "acting-first" kind of film. The camera makes a lot of close ups, really allowing every actor get to the most of their performance. Acting was sublime, surprisingly even on behalf of the 20 year old Sadie Sink. Her performance might have felt a bit awkward just in a few scenes. However, she had several great moments of expressing the most intimate feelings, which she did appropriately subtle. Well done. Special attention to final climax scene of the movie. The dialogue, acting and light altogether made a beautiful piece of cinematography. The music masterfully underlines the mood in all of the scenes, although some might find it a bit melodramatic. Also would like to add: the "make up" for Brendon Fraser is done very well.
