This is a great twist on the brilliant detective trope because it's David Mitchell playing David Mitchell pretending to be a detective and he's very good at playing David Mitchell pretending to be a detective. Its a lot of fun and as the 6 episodes come to a close there's a real mystery about the whole thing. Anna Maxwell-Martin seems to be enjoying herself, too and she's a perfect partner for him. I can't find a great deal to criticise about it beyond the rather lazy choice of location but I do hope it comes back for another run because there is something very fresh about it. As a member of the audience I had fun and the cast and writers seem to be having a lot of fun, too.
As long as you know nothing about trains, communication systems, physics or common sense this is quite a ride. A completely impossible and silly ride but a ride, nonetheless. Yes, it is very stupid and the writers and directors have no knowledge of how things work but that's hardly something new. Once you get beyond the complete dumbness of it all and put that to one side it is quite entertaining.
It's a load of enjoyable nonsense presented very well. There's no point criticising it because it has no connection with reality. It exists in a pretend universe and once you accept that just go along with it.
