Episodes 1-4 were a boring drag, episodes 5-8 were watchable but nothing spectacular, and the last two episodes took a nosedive again. Fincher peaked in 2008 with *Zodiac*; everything since has just been him milking his name. An objective viewer would have noticed that the episodes directed by David were the most tedious and weakest in terms of direction. I don't mean to rain on fans' parade-let them keep drooling over it-but if this was supposed to be the show of the year, then something is seriously wrong.
The casting and premise? Excellent. The production and atmosphere? We've seen it all before, but fair enough, it's solid. However, it's slow, dull, and tedious. A few interesting interviews with serial killers (very well acted) and the occasional gruesome murder that the agents help solve. Overall, just average-and a real pain in the neck.

I think as time has gone on, Se7en has felt more like a silly and cartoonish Hollywood take on serial killers and such. The rise and popularity of more realistic serial killer films like Memories of Murder and Zodiac - as well as the True Crime genre in books, docs, and podcasts - has made Se7en seem contrived in retrospect.
Silence is closer to feeling real, and the theatrics of the Lector character are largely forgiven due to Hopkins's standout performance helping us believe that even if this isn't how serial killers really are, maybe this one genius serial killer could be unique and so this way.

The best thing about this movie is its title. The second best is the emotion it occasionally evokes, especially in the final shot. Beyond that, it suffers from the same issues I have with every Japanese adaptation of a novel-the tired presentation of inner monologues. This happens in anime too. The acting is average, the colors are sometimes so saturated that they look like a TikTok edit, and the plot is filled with clichés, making it predictable at every turn.
TL;DR It wasn't anything special to me, just a film that lingered in the ordinary. But the visuals-they were beautiful enough to make me pause. The music-soulful, weaving through the gaps where the story couldn't reach me.
