First of all, I found the leading male character unlikeable. After learning that he was in need of a kidney transplant he learned the pitfalls of being on the National Transplant List. Attending a wedding he is reunited with a former classmate who had a colorful reputation is an understatement. They get to talking, and he explains his situation. After getting tested it turns out she's a match but her history of substance abuse is a disqualifier. After agreeing to undergo an extensive detox things are now set for the operation. That should have ended the series there. Season 2 then takes a turn where one of the patients she was transporting passes away leaving her a tidy sum of money. .She decides to buy the nursing home where we are introduced to some new characters. I could barely recognize Jane Seymour and Ben Vereen. Still the changes didn't work.
This is almost like a Rexas version of the Karate Kid. I have fond memories of "Mattress Mack" commercials on Paul Boesch's Championship Wrestling Shows from Houston. You have the typical kid being bullied by the local karate champion who also happens to have a crush on his girlfriend.. As with Daniel LaRusso here comes Mako to assume the Myagi role and teaches our hero martial arts.
Finally comes time for the big tournament when they are told they must have at least four members. Sensei's daughter spots a familiar face in the crowd and convinces him to join the team. You get to see many skills performed like kata, breaking demonstration, kubodo, and of course kumite.
