So if we are being honest most DC franchises have missed the mark and have long lived in the shadow of the Marvel Universe. But now that Marvel are scraping the dead bits of the scraper which was used to scrape the bottom of the deepest barrel of desperation. A door has opened for a potential hostile takeover. Gone are the Serious, dark and broody efforts of old and James Gunns Superman brings us a Lighthearted, funny, relatable and most importantly fun version of the Man of Steel. Straight into the action without overly setting the scene and we're off. The plot is straight from the pages of the comics. Unashamedly pushing the limits of believability. With OTT characters, enjoyable with their flaws and their sometimes questionable motivations. I thought the cast were excellently chosen and there was a few stand outs. I loved Jimmy Olsen. He looked so like the comics and was really happy with the choice for Lois. Was glad they never ruined that again. Corensweet was ideal. Not overbearingly cheesy or too overly contemplative like we've seen before. But for me the absolute star of the Movie, who I hope is retained for any follow ups was Nicolas Hoult's Lex Luthor. Brilliantly written. For once we get an actual Evil genius with some truly despicable behaviours. Acted perfectly. I found his performance to be the highlight of the Movie. A Dark, Clever and deranged egomaniac. Hoult played it perfectly. A really enjoyable movie which I hope is the start of a DC revolution where we see all our favourites return and given the proper movies we have all.been craving. A really strong 8 out of 10.
Lots of good stuff for the kids here and as much as I don't want to admit it. Star wars is probably supposed to exist for that audience, so can't really complain. The story is good and keeps you surprised and never followed the obvious path that you think it's going too. I thought it looked great and it definitely had the Star Wars feel to it. Thought Jude Law was great and Nick Frost as SM33 was also a real treat. Where it falls down for me as an adult, was the kids. Although they in the main were more than capable actors. I found both Wim and Fern to be annoying characters. With the other 2 kids being far more palatable. Some of the scenes were a little too unbelievable to get on board with and I found it hard to accept how capable they were in dealing with what was full on Star Wars capers. But in saying that, I imagine a younger audience would be fully on board. Much like I was with "The Goonies" back when I was a kid. A capable effort which definitely sits in the realm of U or PG which is fine, but limits its overall appeal for me and stops it from making a 7.
