Many are being unfairly dismissive of the whole season, and some just can't take anything speaking to any wrongs. Not all of the episodes are bad. Many do seem incomplete and lack some of the "edge of the seat" type feelings.
Ncuti and companion have good chemistry. However the Doctor has cried too much and it's ridiculous. The writing has the Doctor running away more than seems usual, and being overly scared. He is missing some of the qualities that make him a strong and resilient Time Lord, that has come against some of the most powerful beings.
The writing is a little heavy on the Doctor being sexual and his attractions. The episodes and the character need more work, but there are often growing pains. The actors appear to be doing the best with what they have been given.

I know that the movie says it was "inspired by", meaning loosely based, but the production team knew better and should have done better, artistic license be d**&$#!
Virtually every female actor, with a speaking role, that was lighter than medium or light brown was stereotyped as some type of villain. Casting & producers went out of their way to make sure to play up a one way color hatred narrative.
The thinly disguised character of Addie, who was suppose to be Annie Malone, was ridiculous and a work of fiction, created to manufacture untruths between the women. The movie did a great disservice to Annie Malone, who was more likely a millionaire before Madam Walker and very philanthropic in her own right.
The movie also did a disservice to Mrs. Walker's story. An opportunity wasted for many viewers to get a more accurate story of her life.
Unfortunately many people will take this created and stylized version as truth (which people tend to do because it was on TV) and won't really seek out the more accurate story.
